Preparing for your Addition

Northern VA Contractor

An addition, whether a two story or a room addition, will require more work and family preparation than most of your other remodeling needs.

Also, an addition, because of the scope, requires a family to plan out the investment to ensure the experience will turn out the way they plan. And though most homeowners understand the effect construction may have on their day to day lives, there are still questions and concerns.

As part of a two-part series, we will share some questions that come up from homeowners as they consider an addition for their home:

How will my addition impact the landscape of our lot?

When building an addition, there is virtually no way  to avoid the effect that construction will have on your yard and adjoining plants. If you are planning an addition, chances are that landscaping is something that is a lower concern on your list. Whether you need the addition for more space or better utility in your home, these needs will trump some of the more cosmetic items.

But, nonetheless, you can plan how your  home looks after the addition. An addition will affect your yard in terms of your shade and also your layout of plants. In effect, the revised house footprint on your lot will also capture new sun creating changes in heating and cooling because of the additional square footage and natural light.

Prior to construction is the time to move those plants that you want to keep and try to get them to adjust to another section in your yard.

How do you keep the space clean and are there any things we should anticipate when living through a home remodel?

Construction can be a messy business, but that doesn’t mean that the process has to reflect the mess.

Dust is one thing that comes with the process.  It can be managed through the use of zip walls which can contain the remodeled areas from any living spaces. At Moss, we provide ways to keep the elements from getting in your home during your remodel.

Moss isolates the remodeled portion as much as possible to cut down on the feel of construction in your home and to maintain a level of control. With an addition, we bring down any exterior walls last to ensure we keep the elements out and make use of temporary walls if necessary to keep your house functioning.

Another important factor is considering if any family members will have any allergies or asthma by being exposed to the dust. At Moss, it’s these details that we want to know so that we are putting your needs at the forefront of the project to ensure we give you a quality experience.
