Kitchen Remodeling in Northern VA
The kitchen is one of the more popular rooms that homeowners choose to remodel first. One reason is because of its role as a social hub. It’s the room for late-night snacks and quick goodbyes as kids and spouses run off to school and work in the morning.
To get a better look of the design collaboration at Moss, let’s take a look at this recent kitchen remodel in Herndon, VA (seen above and below).

Prior to the remodel, these homeowners knew they wanted to improve aspects of their kitchen such as lack of seating and functionality. Selections weren’t initially as important to the homeowners as these major ideas.
In order to change the kitchen layout to make it more functional, the orientation of the kitchen island was changed and cabinets were pulled from the window for utility and space. In the design process, we also suggested the integration of a knee wall complete with a beverage station to address the unused space with a kitchen column between the kitchen and family room.

With a layout in mind, next came the design and we helped the homeowners make the biggest selection, their cabinets, from which the rest of their design would spring.
Every kitchen takes on a personality and you should focus on one element in order to balance the space and make it special. Many clients choose to do this through the cabinets because they really are the face of the kitchen.
- Kitchen Cabinetry:
For the cabinetry, the homeowners chose from the Stonebridge line of Hampshire Co., a semi-custom line branded by MOSS. The door style was Preston with Maple wood. The color was “Parchment” with Raw Umber Glaze.
This choice allows the homeowners not only the look of a classic kitchen but a truly “wow” moment with the full cabinet-paneled wall. This choice was fairly quick because the homeowners fell in love with the glazed look of the cabinets.
As a contrast, a different look was chosen for the island to break up the off-white color making the island a statement piece as well. The color chosen was “Espresso” with a black Glaze.
More time was spent on the selection of the countertop and the homeowners looked at several options before selecting a light granite color in “Santa Cecelia”.
- Kitchen Lighting:
The rest of the selections were muted in order to better highlight the cabinets so the lighting needed to be complementary and focus on utility.
The homeowners chose a see-through glass for the pendant lighting over the island and kitchen table to minimize view obstruction and to match the finish to the hardware and other fixtures. Under cabinet lighting was introduced near the range for utility and recessed lighting was updated for overall task lighting.
- Other Selections:
Other choices included travertine for the kitchen backsplash and an undermount double bowl sink.
This Herndon, VA kitchen remodel through the collaboration of our MOSS team and the homeowners is now a space with utility and style. Through this remodel, the homeowners can now enjoy a kitchen with more countertop and cabinet space and a great layout whether they are cooking just for the family or entertaining.
