Moss Gives Back During Back-to-School Season

Back-to-school season always conjures up images of opening a clean notebook and taking out sharp pencils and bright crayons on that first day of school. There was something exciting about that new beginning and fresh start to the year that I got every September. To some in our area, however, there can be more angst than excitement as the ever-growing school supply list means an added expense to already financially strapped families.

Our Community Relations team hopes to ease that burden every year by contributing to local non-profit organizations that support families who are in need of food, shelter, affordable housing or other services.

Northern VA Remodeler Gives Back: Share of McLean School Supply Drive

Earlier this month, I stocked up on school supplies to donate to Share of McLean. Share is a local food pantry that also provides furniture and clothing to needy families throughout the year as well as backpacks filled with necessary supplies at the start of the school year. In 2016, Share provided over 900 bags of groceries and 280 bags of used clothing and linens per month to needy families in Northern Virginia.

Another teammate of mine, Pam Kopiak, donated backpacks to Bridges to Independence. This organization is based in Arlington and provides support to homeless families as they transition into stable, independent households.

Finally, Jenn Zschunke, Community Relations Manager, dropped off another load of backpacks with her kids at Cornerstones in Reston, VA. They are partnering with Kids R First to donate 3,000 backpacks to children K-12 in the Reston area this year. You can learn more about their back-to-school drive here.

We hope that giving back to your community is on your to-do list at this time of year as well. If you can’t find a backpack or school supply donation opportunity in your neighborhood, you can always donate to NBC4’s Backpacks 4 Kids program at Apple Federal Credit Union locations through the end of the month.
