In Our Customer’s Words

You’re in the best of hands.

Shannan S., Herndon, basement bathroom

After successfully completing several smaller projects for me, and seeing the quality of work and professionalism of the team, I am now a repeat customer with Moss Building and Design, and hired them to build a full bathroom in my basement. From my first interactions with Camille Delew, the sales and design consultant who negotiated the details and outlined the design, through my final interaction with Marty Fletcher, the project manager, who conducted the final review, the Moss team set themselves apart through seamless support. Valerie Irons, a customer care manager, met with me to walk me through the design process, the unique project management tool (love it!), and offered whatever level of support I needed to make material selections. Valerie was my central point of contact through out the project. Whoever I reached out to, they coordinated the answer/solution and kept each other in the loop. I appreciated that. The build team did a great job. Elwood and Jamey became like extended family, respectful of my home, aware of my pets, and diligent in the build. They did the yeoman’s share of the work and left my home cleaner than when they started! Kevin and Frank were expert craftsman wiring for new light fixtures and electrical circuits, and all the hidden plumbing work that make civilization civilized.

This is the third time I have worked with Moss. The Moss employees are top notch. Kristen and Bob went out of their way to make me happy during the project. Here are just a few examples below. Kristen was great helping to narrow down millions of choices out there for me. She sensed my style and researched items for me in advance. For example, she researched lighting so I wouldn’t spend days trying to figure out what I wanted. From the pendant lights, to chandeliers, to sconces, I would taken over a year to figure that out. I took a picture of a unique vessel sink and waterfall faucet that I loved in a restaurant. Not only did Kristen find it, she made sure it was a smaller version that would fit my space. Left on my own, I either would have never found it, or ordered the wrong size. Bob was always ready answer any question or respond to any request I had. Moving lights, adding shelving, changing knobs, there wasn’t anything that he refused to do. He and Dean are perfectionists. Items I wouldn’t have caught, they took care of. The shelf where the microwave was to go was very plain. Dean decided to match the molding from the cabinets and put it on the shelf giving it a beautiful finished look. When it was done I thought, “Wow, what a difference!” He said he would remove it if I didn’t like it. I told him he was crazy, this is exactly why I hire Moss to do my jobs. Bob was on top of everything, filling all my requests. When the subcontractor didn’t build the trashcan properly, Bob went back to the subcontractor and insisted they make it right. He had them order the correct parts and reconstructed the built-in trashcan correctly. Moss makes the process easy. Expectations are laid out in advance, however, they are willing to work with you during the project to make changes. They pay attention to detail (note the molding example above). If something comes up during the project where the design will not work (say tiling) I would receive a call and have the opportunity to look at it and make a decision on how to handle it. Other contractors, I hear, will just make the decision themselves and the homeowner will have to live with THEIR decision. This doesn’t happen often, but, when it did, I was involved.

Wendy B., Centreville, bathrooms

My assigned Customer Service Manager worked with me to pick out all of the bathroom trims, lighting, and accessories. This was a wonderful experience. Her advice was to browse and choose from a reputable on-line company in order to save some money and time; she was very helpful with tips and experienced opinions. She also advised yet another, money-saving venue to choose and purchase the vanity mirrors. During the entire job, she kept in touch with me to make sure I was satisfied with how things were progressing. The Project Manager and his lead contractor did a walk-through with me before the job was to begin to ensure that all of us fully understood the details of the work to be done. The one major decision point for me to go with Moss was their strict policy of not committing to starting the job(s) until all the required materials were delivered. Both the Project Manager and his contractors were very professional, competent, hard-working, and trustworthy. They always provided very sound advice and were always willing to allow me to look at their progress and willing to explain exactly what they were doing. They always kept me apprised of their schedule and plans for each next day. I was also very impressed with the fact that they were very conscientious about keeping my home damage-free and as clean as possible during the job. The job was completed in two weeks, just like they said; and at a very reasonable cost! I’m in love with the quality of Moss’s commitment to customer service and performance.

Robert M, Vienna – Bathroom

Every aspect of this project was handled with professionalism care and diligence. We had a design in mind for this space (we had waited 20 years to re-do this portion of the house) and Moss worked with us on every aspect of our desires to make them workable given the size of the space, our budget and how we wanted the space to work for our home/life style. We still have one more bathroom to re-do and will definitely use Moss Building and Design.

They did a beautiful job! We have recommended Moss to several friends and colleagues. We've worked with several builders/contractors over the years. By far, Moss is the most professional, honest, skilled contractor we've encountered. Their project manager, Marty, is the best in the business. He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of the construction business, accessible, always available by phone, has answers for all of our questions, and he always made sure to email or call me each day, to let me know how the project was going and when the workers would be there next. We plan to have them do some other project for us, down the road. Additionally, I appreciate that they used licensed workers, that they make sure to get all the proper permits, and they really do things by the book. They also guarantee their work. They are really the best in the northern Virginia, Washington, DC metro region.

Heidi M, Fairfax Station – Bathroom

We purchased a house that, politely put, needed fixing. We contacted Moss Building & Design based on the reviews on Angie's List. It went very well. I had a tight schedule and Moss was very accommodating. Our new home had NO functioning bathrooms. The basement bath had a fascinating shower that was very tiny and about a foot off the ground, clearly not legal or safe. Moss secured all the necessary permits to replace the shower with a proper, safe one plus they updated a workroom to have electricity and fixed many of the other safety issues in the house. They were done in a timely manner and we were able to move into our new, safe and now BEAUTIFUL house on time. Even Brian, our project manager, stated he was surprised at how beautiful it all turned out. I love the new house, a couple of small issues popped up after the work was completed and Moss was quick to address them. Very highly and enthusiastically recommend their services.

Leonard D, Fairfax – Bathrooms

Moss renovated a two room bathroom, and the finished product looks very good. My approximate cost listed above includes tiles and related labor, but not other materials such as faucets, rough ins, vanity, sink, tub shower enclosure or shower panel. My project worked out very well with my getting my own things, but I do not recommend it for others unless they know what they are buying. My project included removing an existing closet, and adjacent tub, moving the toilet a couple of inches, installing a walk in shower where the tub was previously located, and installing a claw foot tub. I wanted Moss to build me a shower base, rather than using prefabricated acrylic, and the result is excellent. The project manager on the job was Bob K., and he was on top of things every step of the way. The Moss employee I was most was Dean B., who really cares about the quality of his work. He really went above and beyond. Both Bob and Dean were great to work with. Regardless of which contractor you choose, always make sure the terms are not only clear, but also favorable to you. I paid 30% down as per stated in my contract, but work did not start until about three months later. It also took more than a month for me to get a contract, so when I did get it, I signed it quickly so as to not contribute to another delay. I did look at other contractors, but liked Moss and did not seriously consider others. Make sure the contract lists every possible thing that you want taken care of, including insulation and other things you might take for granted. If you do not do this early on, it will cost you more later. This applies to any contractor. I am fortunate enough to be able to do most things myself, but I am glad that I called on Moss for this project. With the materials I purchased in addition to the price charged by Moss, my to bathroom reno (about 50 sq ft per room) cost about $40k. If I had to do it again, I would choose Moss again.

John W, Sterling – Bathroom

They did an excellent job from initial design ideas through completion. Workmen were professional and did high quality work. We ran into a major delay in the middle of the project due to late delivery of a window provided and installed by another contractor but Moss was able to work around the problem. We solicited 3 bids. One was considerably higher, and the other was slightly less than the Moss bid. We went with Moss due to the design and designer, a detailed list of the work to be performed, literature provided, website photos of previous work, and good reviews. The old bathroom was completely gutted and new drywall and sub-flooring had to be installed in places. This created considerable fine dust that was difficult to contain in the bathroom. Moss ;tried to minimize the dust using plastic sheets over doorways but it spread throughout the house via the HAVC duct work. Moss was responsive to changes as the project proceeded and price adjustments were made along the way. We were provided a project book that listed each item to be completed as part of the contract along with allowances for purchase of items. This provided a way of tracking work progress and ensured that there were no misunderstandings. Moss was flexible, allowing us to purchase some items that they installed for us and other items they purchased and installed from their own suppliers. Since we are retired we had the time to research various options and suppliers to get the best price and then purchase and supply the item to Moss. Project work was not continuous as the schedule depended upon availability of workmen of different skills; plumbing, electrical, drywall, carpentry, etc. They provided a lock box so they could come and go as needed when we were not home. Moss took care of all the required permits and county inspections. Alex, the overall project leader, came by occasionally to check on the work and see if we had any questions or issues. The fact that he wasn't there frequently was a concern at first but we soon realized that his crews were very skilled and knowledgeable and minimal oversight was needed. He was always available by phone. At the project conclusion, Alex came by and made a short punch list of items that needed some final attention. Those were taken care of in a couple days and a final cleaning was done. We were very happy with the results that exceeded our expectations.
