Northern Virginia’s Best General Contractor

In Our Customer’s Words

You’re in the best of hands.

Michelle W., Arlington, handyman services

It went very well. I had handyman services for a day and he was able to achieve quite a bit on my list including rebuilding a picket fence with new cross bars and pickets, and a new gate/lock/hinge. He even had time to custom cut the picket tops so that they looked just like the old ones. He was very nice, considerate, knowledgeable and skilled. I would really like to have them come back on a regular basis to get things done around the house!

Brandon M, Delaplane – Full Home Renovation

We recently completed a 3200 square foot home renovation, and Moss was the chosen general contractor. I had used Moss in my previous home for a master suite bathroom renovation and was very happy with their work, and wanted to continue the relationship. We brought them in on our new home project, which was a full over-haul of a historic home in Delaplane, Virginia. The home had not been lived in over 7 years and was severely neglected. We needed all disciplines on deck? to do HVAC, plumbing, electrical, drywall, bathroom tiling, kitchen cabinet installation, and flooring. Having a formal education in design and a working background in project management, I knew what to expect from a typical contractor. Moss exceeded my expectations multiple times over. At the beginning of the project, I met with one of the senior managers (multiple times) at the property (quite a distance from their office) and discussed the project in depth. He heard what I wanted, asked the right questions and assisted me in making the right choices for finishes which directly affected the tight timeline in which I needed to complete this house. After receiving and approving the budget (after some massaging), I was happy that Moss fulfilled my request and gave me a project manager with whom I worked previously on my last project. Matt and I met at the home, discussed the budget, scope, and the cost and established a preliminary schedule. Moss was very flexible with me in allowing me to procure some of the materials for a cost savings, which was greatly appreciated. After the permitting process, the Moss staff worked with my schedule for access and the project kicked-off in full speed! The disciplines all talked with one another and worked well in not allowing too much down time. Matt gave me daily updates and status reports on what transpired in the home and the next steps to be taken. Since I believe that Communication is the most important action in a large project (our budget was hovering around at $300k), I appreciated the afternoon calls from Matt and was excited to see their progress. The progress did go well, and all promises were kept. The team was considerate of the home and treated it like their own (e.g.: shoes were removed, trash was picked-up, etc.). The thing I appreciated the most was the getting to know the guys working in the home. It felt like we were a team working towards the same goal: restoring a vintage home. Their professionalism and commitment actually made me feel good about the project we were taking on. The project was not complete when we were forced to move back into the home. It created some scheduling challenges with us being home, but Moss was very kind to work with us and completed the project. Even after the project was formally complete, Matt, the project manager, followed-up on punch list items to ensure his team and his subcontractors took care of the open items. Even Matt himself came over to assist with punch list items so that he could confirm the work was done correctly. That attention to detail was greatly respected which is why I will use Moss on my next project.

Amy D, Fairfax – Remodel

Moss Building and Design listened to our desires for the remodel and concerns about potential issues. The contract proposal was complete, not adding unwanted services or missing requested items. The allowances for materials such as flooring were realistic. They gave us an estimated start and end dates and then kept us well informed of all the work schedule. The team (Brian, Keven, Jonathan, Kristen) assigned to our project were talented and professional at all times. When the project ran into an issue that caused some work to be redone, they were very responsive and resolved the issue with only a minor delay in the project completion. The workmanship is superior and the finished rooms exceed our expectations. The process for changes is easy to deal with and the online tools to keep all the details together was useful. I highly recommend this company for remodels and will call them first for any future needs.

Tom S Alexandria, Multiple remodel

We are very pleased with the three major projects completed by Moss Building and Design over the past few years. Consistently, they have been honest, fair, responsive, careful professionals. They completed the projects on time, and were committed to doing a great job and meeting our expectations. Our first project was completed in 2014. It involved replacement of wood siding, installation of new windows and two skylights and the replacement of gutters, downspouts, scuppers and coping. The work was done carefully, thoughtfully and on time. The next project, about a year later, was a complete kitchen renovation that included expansion into the living room, replacement of those windows that were not replaced as part of the initial project, and overhaul of a guest bedroom. When they were just about to start, we had a leak in the basement. The project manager, Dave Keys, immediately arranged for a plumber to come over to find and repair the leak, which had absolutely nothing to do with the other work they were doing. Moss helped us find and select beautiful wood cabinetry, bamboo floor, quartz countertops and a tile backsplash. Unexpected challenges were quickly resolved largely due to Dave’s positive and creative approach. For example, the existing door opening was too small for our new refrigerator but Dave found a way to widen the masonry opening without having to rebuild the wall. There were other surprises concealed by the walls, ceilings and floors, all of which were addressed without causing unnecessary pain. Whatever needed to get done got done. No excuses. We remain very happy with the kitchen 3 years later. The third project, in 2018, was the remodeling of two bathrooms, the laundry room and a basement bedroom. We had selected a wall tile with an unusual and irregular pattern for the first floor shower walls, with a smaller matching tile for the floor. We expected the pattern on the wall to be random, but the Moss tilers laid out the tiles on the floor, carefully lining up the patterns before deciding where to install each tile. The finished product was much nicer than we expected. It is not every day that you find a contractor who listens as carefully as Moss, explains different ways to solve problems if doing exactly what you want is not realistic, and follows through on time and on budget. Moss also prepared well (putting up dust barriers) and cleaned up carefully. This is why we will choose Moss again the next time we have a project and why we recommend them without hesitation or qualification

Camryn W Vienna, Full home remodel

I’ve returned to Moss again and again for their workmanship and professional ethics. I’ve hired them to do the kitchen, bath, living room built ins, laundry room and exterior work. No job is too big or small. At the end of the day, I trust them to do the right thing. They are not an inexpensive vendor, but they have a lifetime guarantee on workmanship which I take comfort in knowing that I have paid for that security too. I also like that they are willing to work with you to avoid their materials mark up on things you can source and buy directly. I would recommend Moss to my friends and family.
