MOSS, in Spring, is all about Supporting Local Little Leagues
One of the ways that our MOSS Community Relations team enjoys giving back the most (especially during the beautiful spring weather!) is by supporting Northern Virginia Little League organizations. With so many children spending their evenings and weekends on the baseball diamond, how better to support teamwork, fresh air, and exercise than by supporting these ball players and the organizations that so tirelessly work to teach, mentor, and instill love of the game in them?
This spring, as in the past, MOSS has donated time, energy, and monetary support to local Little League organizations. It is our hope that the children involved will enjoy what being on a team is all about – we here at MOSS believe strongly in the power of teamwork, from start to finish, within our company and with each of our customers. Giving back to the community we work in only reinforces that each and everyone is a part of our team.
So if you happen to be out and about near any of these areas, stop by a baseball field and check out the teamwork and baseball in action. From T-Ball to Majors, MOSS wishes every player a successful and fun spring 2019 season!
MOSS Celebrates Take Your Child to Work Day
On April 25, the MOSS team celebrated National Take Your Child to Work Day with an afternoon full of events. In what we hope becomes an annual tradition, employees and their children spent the day exploring what life is like for many of the Moss Building and Design employees.
Children Experience What It’s Like to Be MOSS Employees
First, the kids and parents worked on assembling and painting bird houses and frames. Though not quite a day “in the field,” the hands-on activity was a greatly enjoyed building project.
Other activities included a tour of the warehouse and forklift demonstration, a design your dream bedroom station, mock interviews, a meeting with HR to receive a MOSS shirt and badge, a demonstration of MOSS 360 (Moss Building and Design’s augmented and virtual reality tool), as well as a community relations station to prepare after-school snack pack for a donation to Cornerstones.
Check out more photos from the event on our Moss Building & Design Facebook page.
Thank you to all employees who participated in showcasing their skills for the sons and daughters who attended.
A big thanks as well goes out to Jeannine Miller, pictured above with her daughter and a friend, for coordinating such a successful employee event. We hope to see these young minds and many more next year at Take Your Child to Work Day!
NARI Community Service Award Lauds MOSS’ Donations to Northern Virginia Organizations
MOSS Wins Award for Community Service
The Community Relations Team was proud to accept this year’s National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Metro DC Chapter’s 2019 Capital CotY award for outstanding community service. This is the second year in a row the team has been honored with this award.
Throughout 2018, the team coordinated the donation of funds, handyman services, food, gift cards, and other items to over 100 organizations, schools, and other good causes in Northern Virginia.
“Our team, and company as a whole, is dedicated to making a difference in our community each year. This award reinforces how rewarding our work is for those around us,” said Jennifer Zschunke, MOSS Community Relations Manager.
The company has been community-minded since its founding in 2001. The hallmark of the Community Relations team’s efforts are HandyMOM 101 workshops to empower women to take on home remodeling tasks. Along with coordinating these workshops, the team works with a variety of organizations to sponsor school groups, food drives, races, and more.
Moss Team Accepts Award at “Evening of Excellence”
Julia Kilberg and Janice McLaury accepted the award on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Virginia. The evening, the Annual CotY “Evening of Excellence,” was a blast from start to finish. Here are a couple of photos from the night.
Thanking First Responders On 9/11
By: Jenn Zschunke
As it has for the past several years, Moss Building & Design‘s Community Relations team visited various fire stations around Northern Virginia on the anniversary of September 11th. Taking this time to bring a sweet treat and a special thank you to our area’s first responders reminds them that we are all grateful for their service to us and our community.
Today our team visited the following fire stations: Alexandria Fire Station # 206, Arlington County Fire Station #7, West Centreville Fire Station 38, and McLean Fire Station #1.
We honor and remember those whose lives were lost 17 years ago. #NeverForget
Summer Swim Sponsorships: MOSS Helps Teams Keep Swimmers Fit AND Cool
MOSS’ Community Relations team is always looking for different ways to make a difference. Most community outreach events occur in conjunction with the school year so our summer is a challenge for our team to find sponsorship options.
Beginning a few years ago, we began to look into supporting local area swim teams — what a great way to help community families and to encourage staying healthy and active over the summer. Plus, being in the water during these incredibly HOT days makes everything better!
For 2018, we expanded our support to several different teams, and are so glad we did. We want to wish all the swimmers at the following community pools a successful July and to most of all, be safe in the water: Pinecrest Piranhas (Herndon), Stratford Sharks (Alexandria), and the Water Wizards of Kings Ridge (Fairfax).

MOSS Moms: What We Want for Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 13th. I’m sure many of you have plans for your moms, wives, and grandmas already, right? If not, don’t despair! There are still flowers, cards, and chocolates you can buy, and other lovely ways to show the mom in your life that you care about her.
But just in case you are looking for some other ideas, we polled the moms at MOSS for what THEY would love to receive for Mother’s Day. Maybe these will give you some ideas…
Liz Lee, Project Designer: “A day at the spa.”
Jeannine Miller, People Ops Specialist: “I asked for a new apron or an Apple Watch and said, ‘You kids can decide which you think would make me most happy. Keep in mind, I’m the parent who usually picks out your birthday gifts.”
Michelle Moore, Project Coordinator: “A homemade craft project from my girls.”
Julia Kilberg, Community Relations: “I NEED quiet time with a good fiction book.”
Jenn Zschunke, Community Relations Manager: “To sleep late and do as little as possible around the house.”
So from everyone at MOSS to all of you, Happy Mother’s Day to those moms out there who give their all, all the time. We’re grateful for you and all you do! And if Mom asks for a few projects around the house, don’t hesitate to contact Moss Building & Design for a free estimate at 703.961.7707 or hello@mossbuildinganddesign.com.
MOSS Wins NARI Community Service Award
It is with great excitement that we can announce that Moss Building & Design was recently awarded the 2017 National Association of The Remodeling Industry (NARI) Metro DC’s Chapter Community Service Award. The award is presented to a NARI member who has donated time, materials, and energy to help area individuals and groups in need.
Awards were presented at NARI’s third annual Education Day on April 18, 2018, where attendees were also able to participate in training exercises and listen to speakers discussing the latest industry trends.
Throughout 2017, the MOSS Community Relations team coordinated the donation of funds, volunteer hours, handyman services, food, gift cards, and other items to over 100 organizations, schools, and other good causes in Northern Virginia. Some of the organizations we have worked with include The Women’s Center of Fairfax, Share of McLean, Arlington Free Clinic, Chantilly High School, Bridges to Independence and much more.
It is a privilege for the MOSS Community Relations team to continue working towards helping those in need in Northern Virginia. To be publicly acknowledged in such a way is truly an honor. MOSS Makes A Difference Locally
Giving back to the local Northern Virginia community is a core part of Moss Building & Design‘s values. We employ a team specifically to research local organizations and give volunteer time, monetary contributions, handyman labor, or materials to help make a difference. In 2017, MOSS’ contributed to a record 100 local organizations!
Recently, we wanted to take this outreach even further and utilize the strength in numbers of individuals who attend the Capital Remodel & Garden Show, held in February. We shared with those who stopped by our booth about our charitable work and what it means to us. We wore t-shirts with the names of the organizations we have supported. And we promised to make a donation on behalf of those individuals, who took the time to have an appointment with MOSS, to one of three specific local charities.
It’s amazing what a small group of individuals can do. It is a proud day when you can say that donations were made to the following three organizations which do so much good in the Northern Virginia community. We thank those people who took the time to spend more time with MOSS, and thank the organizations for allowing us to contribute to them.
If you would like to learn more about MOSS and our charitable work, please email Jenn Zschunke, Community Relations Manager, at jzschunke@mossbuildinganddesign.com.
