In Our Customer’s Words

After successfully completing several smaller projects for me, and seeing the quality of work and professionalism of the team, I am now a repeat customer with Moss Building and Design, and hired them to build a full bathroom in my basement. From my first interactions with Camille Delew, the sales and design consultant who negotiated the details and outlined the design, through my final interaction with Marty Fletcher, the project manager, who conducted the final review, the Moss team set themselves apart through seamless support. Valerie Irons, a customer care manager, met with me to walk me through the design process, the unique project management tool (love it!), and offered whatever level of support I needed to make material selections. Valerie was my central point of contact through out the project. Whoever I reached out to, they coordinated the answer/solution and kept each other in the loop. I appreciated that. The build team did a great job. Elwood and Jamey became like extended family, respectful of my home, aware of my pets, and diligent in the build. They did the yeoman’s share of the work and left my home cleaner than when they started! Kevin and Frank were expert craftsman wiring for new light fixtures and electrical circuits, and all the hidden plumbing work that make civilization civilized.

This is the third time I have worked with Moss. The Moss employees are top notch. Kristen and Bob went out of their way to make me happy during the project. Here are just a few examples below. Kristen was great helping to narrow down millions of choices out there for me. She sensed my style and researched items for me in advance. For example, she researched lighting so I wouldn’t spend days trying to figure out what I wanted. From the pendant lights, to chandeliers, to sconces, I would taken over a year to figure that out. I took a picture of a unique vessel sink and waterfall faucet that I loved in a restaurant. Not only did Kristen find it, she made sure it was a smaller version that would fit my space. Left on my own, I either would have never found it, or ordered the wrong size. Bob was always ready answer any question or respond to any request I had. Moving lights, adding shelving, changing knobs, there wasn’t anything that he refused to do. He and Dean are perfectionists. Items I wouldn’t have caught, they took care of. The shelf where the microwave was to go was very plain. Dean decided to match the molding from the cabinets and put it on the shelf giving it a beautiful finished look. When it was done I thought, “Wow, what a difference!” He said he would remove it if I didn’t like it. I told him he was crazy, this is exactly why I hire Moss to do my jobs. Bob was on top of everything, filling all my requests. When the subcontractor didn’t build the trashcan properly, Bob went back to the subcontractor and insisted they make it right. He had them order the correct parts and reconstructed the built-in trashcan correctly. Moss makes the process easy. Expectations are laid out in advance, however, they are willing to work with you during the project to make changes. They pay attention to detail (note the molding example above). If something comes up during the project where the design will not work (say tiling) I would receive a call and have the opportunity to look at it and make a decision on how to handle it. Other contractors, I hear, will just make the decision themselves and the homeowner will have to live with THEIR decision. This doesn’t happen often, but, when it did, I was involved.

My assigned Customer Service Manager worked with me to pick out all of the bathroom trims, lighting, and accessories. This was a wonderful experience. Her advice was to browse and choose from a reputable on-line company in order to save some money and time; she was very helpful with tips and experienced opinions. She also advised yet another, money-saving venue to choose and purchase the vanity mirrors. During the entire job, she kept in touch with me to make sure I was satisfied with how things were progressing. The Project Manager and his lead contractor did a walk-through with me before the job was to begin to ensure that all of us fully understood the details of the work to be done. The one major decision point for me to go with Moss was their strict policy of not committing to starting the job(s) until all the required materials were delivered. Both the Project Manager and his contractors were very professional, competent, hard-working, and trustworthy. They always provided very sound advice and were always willing to allow me to look at their progress and willing to explain exactly what they were doing. They always kept me apprised of their schedule and plans for each next day. I was also very impressed with the fact that they were very conscientious about keeping my home damage-free and as clean as possible during the job. The job was completed in two weeks, just like they said; and at a very reasonable cost! I’m in love with the quality of Moss’s commitment to customer service and performance.

Every aspect of this project was handled with professionalism care and diligence. We had a design in mind for this space (we had waited 20 years to re-do this portion of the house) and Moss worked with us on every aspect of our desires to make them workable given the size of the space, our budget and how we wanted the space to work for our home/life style. We still have one more bathroom to re-do and will definitely use Moss Building and Design.

They did a beautiful job! We have recommended Moss to several friends and colleagues. We've worked with several builders/contractors over the years. By far, Moss is the most professional, honest, skilled contractor we've encountered. Their project manager, Marty, is the best in the business. He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of the construction business, accessible, always available by phone, has answers for all of our questions, and he always made sure to email or call me each day, to let me know how the project was going and when the workers would be there next. We plan to have them do some other project for us, down the road. Additionally, I appreciate that they used licensed workers, that they make sure to get all the proper permits, and they really do things by the book. They also guarantee their work. They are really the best in the northern Virginia, Washington, DC metro region.

We purchased a house that, politely put, needed fixing. We contacted Moss Building & Design based on the reviews on Angie's List. It went very well. I had a tight schedule and Moss was very accommodating. Our new home had NO functioning bathrooms. The basement bath had a fascinating shower that was very tiny and about a foot off the ground, clearly not legal or safe. Moss secured all the necessary permits to replace the shower with a proper, safe one plus they updated a workroom to have electricity and fixed many of the other safety issues in the house. They were done in a timely manner and we were able to move into our new, safe and now BEAUTIFUL house on time. Even Brian, our project manager, stated he was surprised at how beautiful it all turned out. I love the new house, a couple of small issues popped up after the work was completed and Moss was quick to address them. Very highly and enthusiastically recommend their services.

Moss renovated a two room bathroom, and the finished product looks very good. My approximate cost listed above includes tiles and related labor, but not other materials such as faucets, rough ins, vanity, sink, tub shower enclosure or shower panel. My project worked out very well with my getting my own things, but I do not recommend it for others unless they know what they are buying. My project included removing an existing closet, and adjacent tub, moving the toilet a couple of inches, installing a walk in shower where the tub was previously located, and installing a claw foot tub. I wanted Moss to build me a shower base, rather than using prefabricated acrylic, and the result is excellent. The project manager on the job was Bob K., and he was on top of things every step of the way. The Moss employee I was most was Dean B., who really cares about the quality of his work. He really went above and beyond. Both Bob and Dean were great to work with. Regardless of which contractor you choose, always make sure the terms are not only clear, but also favorable to you. I paid 30% down as per stated in my contract, but work did not start until about three months later. It also took more than a month for me to get a contract, so when I did get it, I signed it quickly so as to not contribute to another delay. I did look at other contractors, but liked Moss and did not seriously consider others. Make sure the contract lists every possible thing that you want taken care of, including insulation and other things you might take for granted. If you do not do this early on, it will cost you more later. This applies to any contractor. I am fortunate enough to be able to do most things myself, but I am glad that I called on Moss for this project. With the materials I purchased in addition to the price charged by Moss, my to bathroom reno (about 50 sq ft per room) cost about $40k. If I had to do it again, I would choose Moss again.

They did an excellent job from initial design ideas through completion. Workmen were professional and did high quality work. We ran into a major delay in the middle of the project due to late delivery of a window provided and installed by another contractor but Moss was able to work around the problem. We solicited 3 bids. One was considerably higher, and the other was slightly less than the Moss bid. We went with Moss due to the design and designer, a detailed list of the work to be performed, literature provided, website photos of previous work, and good reviews. The old bathroom was completely gutted and new drywall and sub-flooring had to be installed in places. This created considerable fine dust that was difficult to contain in the bathroom. Moss ;tried to minimize the dust using plastic sheets over doorways but it spread throughout the house via the HAVC duct work. Moss was responsive to changes as the project proceeded and price adjustments were made along the way. We were provided a project book that listed each item to be completed as part of the contract along with allowances for purchase of items. This provided a way of tracking work progress and ensured that there were no misunderstandings. Moss was flexible, allowing us to purchase some items that they installed for us and other items they purchased and installed from their own suppliers. Since we are retired we had the time to research various options and suppliers to get the best price and then purchase and supply the item to Moss. Project work was not continuous as the schedule depended upon availability of workmen of different skills; plumbing, electrical, drywall, carpentry, etc. They provided a lock box so they could come and go as needed when we were not home. Moss took care of all the required permits and county inspections. Alex, the overall project leader, came by occasionally to check on the work and see if we had any questions or issues. The fact that he wasn't there frequently was a concern at first but we soon realized that his crews were very skilled and knowledgeable and minimal oversight was needed. He was always available by phone. At the project conclusion, Alex came by and made a short punch list of items that needed some final attention. Those were taken care of in a couple days and a final cleaning was done. We were very happy with the results that exceeded our expectations.

I don't get to say this often about a contractor, but absolutely nothing went wrong. I didn't have to do anything but pay the bills; my project manager, Matt Alspaugh handled all the stress. He called me about once a week to give me updates and prompt me to make decisions or purchase materials. He kept me organized, and kept his craftsmen and subcontractors organized, with all his punch lists. The construction foreman, Brady, was good at spotting potential problems ahead of time, and he called me up to discuss them with me before making a decision. I really liked that. While Brady & son were putting in the bathroom, we had a cold snap and 4 pipes burst under the downstairs bathroom, in the crawl space. I used Moss's plumber to fix them. A couple weeks later, with another cold snap in the forecast, Matt sent Brady & son over after hours to do an emergency insulation of the access points into the crawl space, thus preventing a repeat. I realized later that they were protecting their investment and avoiding a situation wherein the homeowner might think they should fix the pipes for free. That was an example of the thinking ahead that impressed me throughout the project.
These guys are experienced and know what they are doing. I saw that at all levels, from the co-owner, Jason Hampel, who gave me the initial estimate and convinced me that I wanted to work with Moss, on down to the guys who were upstairs banging nails into walls. I'm surprised they don't charge more; their price of $60,000 was quite competitive with other contractors. But their people are the best.

Very happy with the work performed by Moss with remodeling our bathroom. Nick who came out to give us an estimate was great. He was very professional and responsive. Was always prompt with all the questions we had. Bob Keene the project manager was awesome to work with. He is always very communicative and on time. He is extremely easy to work with. Taylor who worked on tiles was great. Was on time every single day. Took great care to clean up at the end of the day. Very good with my puppy. The work performed was great. The bathroom turned out very well and we are very happy with the end result.

Moss recently completed a major Master Bathroom remodel and a Powder Room update as well. The initial proposal was very timely and as detailed as possible, given we needed to do design work on the Master Bathroom. The work began as scheduled and all the various crews were professional and very respectful of our home. Though we did encounter a construction issue which extended the completion time, we were very satisfied with how this was handled by our Project Manager, Bob. Moss does not sacrifice quality for schedule!

In comparison to our previous projects (e.g. adding a second story, complete kitchen remodel, new bathroom on main level) this project was a breeze! I attribute this largely to our wonderful project manager. He was intimately involved in every aspect of the project and kept us apprised daily of how things were proceeding and accordingly, next steps. We called and/or texted him if we had questions or concerns about the project and he ALWAYS responded. All clients expect this of the Company they hire to do their work! The subcontractors (plumbers, tile people, electricians, shower door installers) were outstanding. They did their jobs and did them well. With the exception of the electricians, all showed up on time and on the day they were scheduled. The electricians did a good job but had issues with their times and schedules. Based upon my wonderful experience with MOSS I would not hesitate to call them again. That said, in the near future I plan to use their handyman service for a day to handle some small projects.

We hired Moss Building & Design to convert a bedroom to a bathroom. They did a great job. They provided weekly updates on the progress. The workers cleaned the job site everyday after work-this was very important since we were still sleeping at the bedrooms right next to the construction. And at the completion of the work, professional cleaners were hired to clean the site thoroughly. Travis Koon was our project manager. He was on top of the work and responded to all my questions and requests. And Frank from Moss did all the plumbing work. He took care of all plumbing issued occurred during the construction and made modifications per my requests expediently. Very professional and thorough.

I’ve returned to Moss again and again for their workmanship and professional ethics. I’ve hired them to do the kitchen, bath, living room built ins, laundry room and exterior work. No job is too big or small. At the end of the day, I trust them to do the right thing. They are not an inexpensive vendor, but they have a lifetime guarantee on workmanship which I take comfort in knowing that I have paid for that security too. I also like that they are willing to work with you to avoid their materials mark up on things you can source and buy directly. I would recommend Moss to my friends and family.

Great experience every time. I have been a customer for the last 13 years or so. Have completed multiple projects and have always found them to be very professional and workmanship is exceptional. From the time of estimate to completion they have been great. Even when I have had small issues they have been resolved to my complete satisfaction. Moss has completed basement, bathrooms, electrical and plumbing work and have never had a need to call them back for repairs etc. Definitely recommend them for any house projects.

My husband and I did an addition with Moss Building and Design. We decided to do an addition because we love our neighborhood and yard (about a half-acre outside of Old Town). Our house was a little under 1,000 square feet and is now just over 2,000 square feet. Moss helped us double the size of our house which included a brand new kitchen, laundry room, powder room, office/4th bedroom, master suite (bath and closet), and screened in covered porch. We also reconfigured the existing bedrooms and created a dining room. Moss designed the space to meet our needs and worked with us to make sure the layout functioned. It was important to us to make sure the addition flowed well with the existing house. Moss also help us to create a custom built in bench in our mudroom and two custom built in china cabinets in the dining room. We lived in our house throughout the duration of the project. We started our project in August 2015 and completed in February 2016. Moss stands by their work and offers a lifetime warranty. They have an amazing team of people. We have enjoyed our partnership with them. It has now been over 3 years since our project was completed and we had an issue with our crawl space. Our pest guy informed us that our insulation was falling down. Moss had installed new insulation during our addition. We contacted David Greksouk and he quickly got us in touch with Damon our new project manager. Damon had someone come out to look at it and then they had the contracted crawl space company look at it. Moss stood by their work and covered all costs to replace the insulation. They even added a net to insure it wouldn't happen in the future. Damon explained that the net is not required but is an extra step that they will willing to pay for to make sure we were satisfied with the job. We were already customers for life after our addition was completed, but the way they handled our crawl space issue cemented our decision to be customers for life. We are now planning to do a patio and we know Moss is the right design build company for the job. If you are looking for a design build company, look no further and contact Moss Building and Design. You won't regret it, trust us.
