The other afternoon I met a friend from my daughter’s school in McLean, for a walk around the neighborhood before pick-up.  She casually mentioned that MOSS was coming out later that week to give her a free in-home consultation on a possible addition and bathroom remodel.  She excitedly began to tell me the different design ideas that she and her husband had been talking about for years!  However, the one thing that caught my attention was how they planned on adding space to their current Cape Cod without drastically altering the elevation.  Lucky for them, MOSS has an expert team of home-building professionals with many tools at their disposal (like MOSS 360)! Peaking my interest, I decided to reach out to another good friend, realtor Sara Bjerde, (who also happens to be a resident “McLeanian”). I asked her what the top three home-styles in McLean are and what, if any, addition-solutions Moss Building & Design could bring to the table.

Remodeling in McLean

If you happen to be in one of the neighborhoods that haven’t all “turned” (and by “turned” I mean where the older homes have been completely torn down and re-built), your housing styles tend to fall into one of three categories: cape cod, rambler or ranch.  Perhaps what started off as your starter home doesn’t necessarily fit your family needs (2-3 kids later) now.  So, with a couple of different addition-models you can alter the blue print of your home while still maintaining the integrity of what you love about your home!

“Pop-Up” Addition

A pop-up is when you add an additional floor to your home.  This type of addition is usually great for the ranch-style home.  You can literally double the square footage without using any of your land (which in McLean is a commodity these days).

“Two Story” Addition

An envelope addition usually means adding partially to a 2^nd floor and wrapping around the home onto the first floor. Picture a master bedroom addition and great room addition.  This type of remodel is perfect for those 3 bedroom ramblers here in McLean.  Mom and Dad decide that sharing a bathroom with their 5 year old is getting old so they decided to build a bedroom/bathroom oasis on the 2^nd floor and BONUS, Great Room, on the main level.  This type of addition tends to be the MOST effective way of adding square footage without a huge budget!

“Bump-Out”

If you are looking to add a little bit of space without breaking the bank, many people opt to add a bump-out to their main floor.  This is great for expanding your current kitchen, adding an additional main floor bathroom, or simply creating a new office space.  I see a lot of Cape Cod style homes here in McLean with a back bump out!  This allows for additional square footage without drastically changing the charming elevation of what you love about the Cape Cod feel!

Best Design/Build in Arlington, VA

Last week we hosted an open house to show the Northern Virginia community our latest three story addition in Arlington, VA. The attendees seemed to be very pleased with the kitchen bump out, extended dining room, and outdoor living space.

The homeowners of this 1965 home were considering remodeling their home for quite some time. When two trees fell on their house, they knew there was no putting this off any longer.

When planning their home improvements, their goals were very precise:

• An eat-in kitchen with plenty of room to accommodate all family members
• An open, informal space for entertaining
• Maximize deck space for use in at least three seasons

They decided to design their new dining space with a transitional style which seamlessly combines elements of both contemporary and traditional styles. The final result was a beautiful Arlington home that reflects our customers’ lifestyle and personal taste.The dining room’s extended table is complete with two navy Miles Upholstered Dining Arm Chairs and four smoke leather Lowe Dining Chairs, both from Crate and Barrel. The room is well lit with two beautiful small Zinc Orbit Globe Chandelier’s above the table, which is a huge trend in the interior design world at the moment.

Prior to renovations their kitchen was too small to accommodate their family’s needs. Making meals, hosting family gatherings, and even just simple family time felt forced and cramped. This was one of the homeowner’s main focuses that MOSS worked closely with them on to incorporate all of their wants and needs into the final product.

Their kitchen is composed of a Maytag 30″ electric double wall oven with Precision Cooking System, a GE Stainless Steel beverage center, and Thermador 36″ gas cooktop. The main attraction, the kitchen island, is Blanco Maple Silestone accompanied by five charcoal Peppermill Counter Stools from West Elm.

The deck attached to the kitchen and dining room is another main attraction. This outdoor living space is complete with a wood-burning fireplace, outdoor ceiling fan (Minka Aire in brushed nickel to be exact), patio dining table, and corner television for the sports-fanatics of the family.

We also incorporated a mudroom in their entryway as an easy way for their family of young boys to store their belongings when they return home from their busy lives. The mudroom is painted a bright Obstinate Orange, with an eggshell finish by Sherwin Williams.

MOSS Kitchen Remodel on The TODAY Show with Kathie Lee and Hoda

In case you missed the May 8^th Mother’s Day segment on NBC’s The TODAY Show, a MOSS kitchen remodel created a big surprise.

The segment covered a surprise kitchen remodel for the mother of TODAY Show co-host of the “Kathie Lee and Hoda” show, Hoda Kotb.

Remodeling her mother Sami’s kitchen had been a dream of Hoda’s for years.

The project was on a tight deadline with only a week for MOSS to finish the remodel while Sami was with Hoda in New York City for a week. But we took on the challenge by working around the clock and using our turn-key approach to remodel the kitchen in time for Sami’s arrival. Lowe’s provided the materials.

The project involved: demoing the entire kitchen and removing a 6’ section of wall between the kitchen and living room. New cabinets, countertops, backsplash, kitchen appliances and lighting were installed as well as 3 auto open cabinets.

After 8 straight days with 12+ hours of work each day, the renovation was complete and ready to be revealed.

On April 24th, MOSS and Lowe’s representatives were there to welcome Hoda and her mom, Sami in the newly-remodeled kitchen. The NBC filming crew recorded Sami’s reaction for the Mother’s Day segment that aired on the TODAY Show.

As a family-owned company, this experience was exciting, but more importantly, meaningful because of the significance this space held to both Sami and Hoda. “That place is such the center,” Hoda said about the kitchen. “It’s such the heartbeat of our family.”

Being a part of these remodels is what MOSS is all about because remodeling is a personal business that blends together family and function.
