Our Great Falls homeowners were ready for an interior remodel that would transform their lives. From revamping their outdated kitchen to constructing a new home office, the family now lives in a more functional space that better suits their everyday lifestyle.

Vision:

This family with three kids was looking to make a change that could better leverage the opportunities in the house. There were multiple areas that could use a refresh and our customers curated ideas they had in mind for their home. The family wished for a more open floor plan on the first floor to foster togetherness in the house. While incorporating this update, it was also important that the kitchen received a makeover to remove it’s dated appearance and to specifically have two dishwashers. Lastly, they yearned for a dedicated space to work from home and more storage opportunities.

Their master bathroom on the second floor included a large bathtub that the family no longer needed. They thought to make use of the space in a more functional way with a beautiful new walk-in shower.

Scope:

The scope of work on the first floor included creating a seamless connection between the kitchen and living room, achieved through adding a kitchen wall cut-out. One of the homeowner’s top priorities was to introduce a second dishwasher in the kitchen island for their large family meals. Additionally, potential was found in transforming the large, underutilized dining room into three different spaces. First, a walk-in pantry to supplement their overall improved kitchen. Second, a spacious home office to accommodate their work from home needs. Third, MOSS integrated a mudroom to store their kids’ coats and shoes in a more organized manner. With the inclusion of the mudroom, MOSS then would relocate the garage door to the other side of the kitchen and create a charming bar area where the door used to be, adding a touch of elegance to this updated kitchen.

For the second floor, the homeowners had a very large master bathroom with a bathtub they rarely used. A new, luxurious walk-in shower would be constructed in its place. There was extra room left, since the bathtub took up so much space, that our team came up with a new idea the homeowners did not originally envision: adding a mini laundry room. It’s perfect for throwing your towels or clothes in after a shower!

Budget:

MOSS assisted the homeowners in establishing a budget for their interior home remodel by considering their vision, the final scope of work, and prioritizing areas that would have the most significant impact on their living space. Kitchen:

Linear backsplash tiles were installed along with light colored cabinetry to revamp the kitchen. MOSS designers and the homeowners gravitated toward choosing traditional styles for the interior design of the space to blend smoothly with the rest of the home.

Office:

Their in-home office now remains an integral part of the house. With a pocket door, the homeowners have the option to keep the door fully open to be involved in kitchen conversations and slide closed for when they need focused work time.

Mudroom + Pantry:

The Great Falls homeowners didn’t need the entire dining room to be converted into their home office. MOSS was able to design a new mudroom and walk-in pantry to utilize the rest of the space, adding more storage opportunities to cultivate better organization.

Master Bathroom:

Originally, MOSS was hired to do a partial remodel, which would have been to keep the flooring and only remodel the shower. However, as we started working on selections, the clients decided to enlarge the project and remodel the entire bathroom to make everything new. The before and after pictures leave a big impression on the transformation that occurred in the space.

Laundry Room:

Creating a laundry room with the extra space in the master bathroom was a unique update that the client was not initially envisioning. Effective communication of goals between MOSS and the clients helped generate this idea to add to the scope of work. They love their brand-new laundry room and it is just what they needed, making it way more convenient for them to do laundry as opposed to walking down to the basement.

Renovating a home to make it more suitable for a large family is a common reason people come to MOSS. Our customers residing in McLean wanted a kitchen and basement makeover that offered seating for the whole family and optimal storage opportunities. With specific remodeling ideas they wanted implemented as well as our designer’s suggestions, the finished product is a pristine kitchen and basement remodel that will be enjoyed for years to come. Kitchen Updates

The homeowner’s previous cabinets, countertops, sinks, faucets, lighting, and hardwood flooring (as needed) were removed to make way for their new kitchen reconfiguration. All new water supply lines, gas lines, and venting were installed in the same or near existing locations. The exact locations of the lighting, receptacles, switches, etc. were determined during a “walk thru” after framing the space. Additionally, appliances were upgraded and shifted to compliment the new arrangement and create a more functional kitchen for the family.

With precision, MOSS worked to blend and match all existing trim and cabinetry as close as possible to the new features that were being added to the space. While you can recognize it as the same kitchen in the before and after pictures, the transformation and upgrades are nothing short of remarkable.

Ceramic tile backsplash was positioned in a horizontal pattern between all counter tops and wall cabinets. As seen in the images below, the white brightens up the space and adds a layer of pristine and elegance.

Basement Updates

The basement underwent a remarkable transformation, with renovations carried out in both the bathroom and the main living area. Beginning with the bathroom, the removal of the door and side wall expanded the space, while the expert touch of MOSS designers brought in elements such as the sophisticated Wedi shower floor system. This complemented porcelain tiles on the shower floor, walls, and ceiling, along with a semi-frameless glass shower enclosure as the perfect finishing touch. To maximize storage options, the mirror was integrated into a medicine cabinet. Furthermore, a space-saving barn door was introduced, eliminating the need for a swinging door.

Transitioning to the main living area of the basement, the addition of wood ceiling beams elevated the aesthetic appeal of the space and brought incredible character and uniqueness. These beams effortlessly immersed the area with a touch of rustic charm, infusing the atmosphere with a cozy ambiance that entices, enchants, and compliments the wood slab bar top.

To enhance the dry bar addition in the basement, exquisite butcherblock countertops were thoughtfully selected. Now equipped for entertaining and fostering cherished moments, this basement stands as a complete haven brimming with opportunities to create lasting memories together with the family.

Our MOSS Building & Design customers purchased their Annandale home many years ago, and while they always loved the set up and layout of the house, they felt that many parts of the house were getting older and required updating. They had specific goals for the remodel, including wanting better functionality and storage in the kitchen, and a fresh and updated look for both their hallway and primary bathrooms.

More Functional Kitchen with Unique Curved Cabinetry

The homeowners had specific goals for their kitchen remodel, including better storage, more food prep areas, wider doorways and openings to and from the space, and a more cohesive look overall. Working with the MOSS design team to re-allocate the space allowed for exactly what our customers wanted. The unique curved cabinetry helps use the space in the corner of the kitchen much more functionally and installing cabinets to the ceiling allows for even more space for storage, including a beloved and well-used spice rack. The cabinets were procured from Hampshire Cabinetry and are painted Nordic White.

The addition of the beverage center allows for more countertop space for a “catch all” spot when the homeowners enter their home, and frees up other countertop space for food and meal prep. The countertop stone throughout the kitchen is pristine polished quartz from EuroStone Craft. The kitchen backsplash, which was added on to the project once it began, is a gorgeous Calacatta Grey Teardrop from Ocean Mosaics. The shape of the teardrop mimics the mullion design on the glass-fronted cabinet doors in the kitchen as well as a trio of mirrors in the main hallway.

Updated Bathrooms Create Calm and Comfort

This project also included the remodeling of the home’s two main level bathrooms. The hallway bathroom had been updated by the previous owner, but the materials used were basic and were showing their age. Our homeowners knew they wanted to keep the tub in there but otherwise the space was updated with a new prefabricated vanity with quartz countertop (purchased by the homeowners themselves), flooring (Atlas Concorde Impression Grey Leaf Mosaic porcelain tile from Mosaic Tile), and wall tile on the bathtub/shower (Atlas Concorde Impression White 3"x12" porcelain tile also from Mosaic Tile).

The primary bathroom was originally awkward in design. Inspired by the tile that was eventually installed as the vertical “waterfall” in the updated shower (“Feathers” marble and glass mosaic from Mosaic Tile), which our homeowners knew they wanted, the idea to flip the location of the double vanity made sense for better flow in the room. Now with semi-custom vanity cabinets from Hampshire Cabinetry, providing plenty of in-bathroom storage, as well as two recessed medicine cabinets, and a heated floor, the bathroom is a calm and cozy oasis for our customers. The shower itself showcases not only the beautiful vertical waterfall effect tile as an accent, but also matte white subway tile on the walls, also from Mosaic Tile. The accent tile in the shower is mimicked on the backsplash of the vanities as well. The glass enclosure for the shower is from Dulles Glass.

Contemporary Stair Railing & Flooring

Another area that our homeowners longed to modernize was the stair railing heading to their basement. It was original to the home, and they wanted a more modern and contemporary look. The stair railing and stairs were re-built and stained to match the flooring on the entire main level of the home (which was also not part of the original scope of the project). The floors are pre-finished hardwood in an oak dark chocolate color from Mullican Flooring and procured from Derr Flooring. The trio of mirrors mentioned earlier are displayed above the stair railing and provide a gorgeous backdrop when entering the home from the front door.

What does a family do when their contractor fails to complete a remodeling project? This is what happened to these Oakton customers, who were in the process of adding a main level addition to their home so that the homeowners, who were experiencing ongoing health issues, could age in place at their beloved home. Large Bedroom with Plenty of Light

The new addition was added to the main level of this Oakton home off the living room, which makes it a natural extension from the original structure. The addition is within several feet of the kitchen, which is helpful so that another kitchen didn’t have to be added. The doorways are wide to accommodate wheelchair use, and the windows have electric shades easily controlled by remote. The carpet is from Mohawk Flooring in the color Ghost Town while all interior doors are courtesy of TW Perry.

Spacious Bathroom & Water Closet with Safety Features

Again featuring large doorways, the addition’s bathroom and separate water closet feature several safety elements. The water closet has safety bars for grabbing, and the shower has a curbless entry. The shower has beautiful neutral tile and fixtures from Morris Tile.

Walk-In Closet and Home Office Complete Oakton Remodel

Because the goal of this remodel was a full suite, not only does it include a bedroom and bathroom, but, also, a roomy walk-in closet and generous home office. The closet was designed specifically so that clothes could be reachable from both standing and seated. The office faces the home’s backyard and has large windows with plentiful views of nature.

Herndon Primary Bathroom Remodel Inspired by “Hygge”

Inspired by the Scandinavian feeling of “hygge,” which is a lifestyle of comfort and warmth, our Herndon homeowners worked with our design team to create a bathroom that was comfortable, quietly rustic, functional, spa-like, and, most importantly, soothing. This Herndon Primary Bathroom Remodel was a great showcase of what MOSS can do with bathroom remodeling services.

Creating Dream Primary Bathroom

Our customers knew that their primary bathroom was far too small for them. By taking space from the adjoining hallway and reducing the size of their bedroom closet, the space was found to create a remodeled bathroom that gives them the space they desired for a soaking tub, large vanity, beautiful walk-in shower, and, for privacy, a separate water closet with small vanity. Plentiful storage in all the spaces but also on the floating shelves leading to the water closet was also a key component to the design.

Gorgeous Flooring Doubles on Walls

Our design team suggested that the floor tile, that looks like hardwood, be used also as an accent on the wall behind the tub and shower area as well as in the water closet. What a gorgeous way to create a spa-like feeling and add more soothing neutral tones to the space! The tile is from The Tile Shop.

The shower floor tile, from Daltile, is a black porcelain, while the shower wall tile, laid in a brick pattern, is Florentine Carrara and from Daltile as well, and, finally, the shower glass enclosure is from Dulles Glass. All bathroom plumbing fixtures were procured from Ferguson.

The bathroom vanity features a Silestone countertop from Eurostone Craft sitting atop a Danenburg 48-inch cabinet in Russet Brown.

Neutral Wall Colors Create Ambiance

The color of the walls in any room can set the tone for a space. Our homeowners chose a Sherwin-Williams Origami White for all the walls and a Sherwin-Williams Reflective White for their trim and doors.

A beautifully soothing bathroom, such as this one in Herndon, can be achieved with careful design decisions coupled with an inspired vision.

Our MOSS Building & Design customers wanted to stay in their home in their McLean community, with friendly neighbors and good schools for their children, however, their home, a standard split foyer, didn’t suit their needs as their children grew. Working with our design team, the homeowners decided to “build up” and add an entire upper level to their home, which included a primary suite with attached bathroom, two bedrooms for their children with a “jack and jill” connected bathroom, a large laundry room, and much more storage. MOSS also transformed an original bedroom into a new home gym and updated the basement with built-ins and a fireplace to mimic the new built-ins and fireplace on the main level living room, plus added on a front porch with beautiful stonework. A final touch? The entire exterior was updated with new siding and a subdued blue gray color scheme – a dramatic difference from the original brick exterior.

Dramatic Exterior Updates to McLean Home

The most immediate change to this home was on the exterior. After building the second level, the entire home was outfitted with James Hardie Woodgrain Straight Shingle Night Gray siding on the roof while the exterior walls had James Hardie Exposure Woodgrain Lap Siding, also in Night Gray, installed. The newly built front porch features natural facings Autumn Crest mosaic stone from Sislers Stone and a porch light from Wayfair.com.

Gorgeous Fireplace Built-Ins in Basement and Family Room and new Home Gym

Because the family chose to build an addition for more space, their original basement and living room were able to be remodeled with featured built ins and fireplaces. Both rooms now have prefabricated gas fireplaces from Fireside Hearth & Home, as well as built-ins hand crafted by MOSS carpenters. In addition, both rooms feature countertops from EuroStone Craft on the fireplace hearths, with the basement showcasing granite and the living room featuring Silestone.

In addition, a former bedroom was able to be transformed into a home gym with new rubber gym flooring, procured from Rubber Flooring, Inc.

Foyer Chandelier Highlights New Stairs and Railing

The addition of a second level to this home was a natural way to add the space the family desired while also keeping their generous yard available for outdoor family time. A full center staircase was added and outfitted with hardwood floors to match the rest of the house. A beautiful foyer chandelier from Houzz.com was installed to draw the eye and light the way up the stairs to the newly built bedrooms and laundry room.

Childrens’ Bedrooms and Bathroom Provide Ample Space

Our homeowners wanted their children to have their own bedrooms that shared a “jack and jill” bathroom. The two rooms are generous in size and feature the same hardwood flooring as the staircase and central areas, as well as a beautiful and roomy bathroom.

The bathroom was designed to accommodate more than one person at a time while also providing privacy. The cabinetry is a Beckett 60" Single Bathroom Vanity in Dark Gray, White Cultured Marble Countertop from Ferguson.

The shower glass enclosure is from Dulles Glass, while all the tile, including that on the shower floor and walls, Carrara Marble and Marzzi Tile’s “Middleton Square,” respectively, was procured from Mosaic Tile.

Convenient Upstairs Laundry Room

With the addition of the second level came the desire to create a laundry room that was convenient for the bedrooms (and the dirty clothes!). The laundry room, located between the primary suite and the children's bedrooms, features cabinetry from Lowes and a Quartz Calacatta Clara countertop from EuroStone Craft.

Spacious Primary Suite Featuring Stunning Bathroom with Soaking Tub

One of the main goals of this beautiful McLean addition was the creation of a primary suite that was roomy, comfortable, and private. Not only is the bedroom portion all of these, but the bathroom also takes things up a notch.

The bathroom features a private toilet room, a double sink vanity with sinks from Kohler, a countertop of Quartz Calacatta Clara (same as the laundry room) from EuroStone Craft, and cabinetry from Hampshire, and a freestanding Jacuzzi tub. The shower is tiled on the floor with San Grigio Cesari polished hexagon porcelain mosaic and with Viviano marble mosaic in the niche, and large format porcelain tile on the walls, all of which was procured from Mosaic Tile.
