7 Steps To Decluttering Your Home In 2019
By: The MOSS Team
Nobody likes clutter in their home! It darkens the space, makes cleaning difficult, and leads to disorganization. Make 2019 the year to remove clutter and to live a simpler, happier lifestyle. These decluttering tips from MOSS make it easy to get organized.
Organize Closets
The first place to look for clutter is the closet. Start your decluttering project by tracking which clothes, shoes, and accessories you actually use. Place sentimental items, like family jewelry or a box of old cards, in a bin to be saved. Once you’re done, get rid of everything that you no longer need or wear. Donate it or sell it.
When you narrow down what to keep and what to throw away, install organizational systems in your closet. Think about custom shelving, bins, or drawers to organize what’s left. Install a shoe rack or a hanging shoe organizer over the closet door.
Make a rule: Nothing sits on the floor of your closet anymore. Everything must have a place.
Recycle And Upcycle
Don’t throw away your old furniture. Upcycle it! Turn your child’s crib into a toddler bed, transform an old set of bookshelves into a bench, or turn your old console television into a beautiful fish tank. These great upcycle projects keep waste out of landfills and test your DIY skills.
If you’re not big on upcycling your old furniture, offer it to anyone who will come collect it. You give someone else a gift, and your home will look so much more organized and spacious when the old furniture is gone.
Remove Duplicates
Sort through collections of books, utensils, picture frames, vases, and everything else that you may have multiple of. Give away duplicates to charities and consignment shops or to a young family member or friend who’s moving into their first apartment.
If the collection of free items is large enough, list them in an online classified ad with that old furniture.
Reduce Kitchen Clutter
Most people have more pots and pans, plates, silverware, tea towels, and baking sheets than they actually use. Keeping in tune with donating duplicates, give away any usable kitchen clutter you haven’t used in the last two years. Also, throw away anything that’s no longer functional.
Make An Inventory
Make an inventory of any large collections, like books, movies, and vintage records, that you own. These are hard to keep organized as you collect, but an inventory helps you to get organized. By going through your collection, you can donate or sell any extras, throw away any duds, and decide what you want to keep.
Once the inventory is made, organize the remainder of the collection alphabetically or by purchase date, or color code it.
Install Custom Storage
Evaluate your current storage space. Do you have enough kitchen cabinets? Are your bookshelves big enough? What doesn’t fit inside the garage? Could you make better use of the storage you have, or would you be better off with new storage?
Custom built-in storage improves your home’s property value and simplifies the organization process. Talk to a remodeling contractor, like MOSS, about installing custom storage in your home. A good remodeler assesses what you have, discusses what could be improved, and draws up solutions for new storage space.
Organize Your Kid’s Bedroom
It sounds painful, but the process of sorting and organizing toys is rewarding. Make it a parent-child playdate and determine what your kid wants to keep, what’s broken, and what can be donated to nurseries or children’s hospitals.
After sorting, install low shelves or bins that your child can reach. Sort toys into bins or boxes by category. Board games, arts and crafts supplies, play costumes, and educational toys should all have their own place.
Keep your child involved in this decluttering process to teach your child about the organizational system when it’s finished. This makes it easier for your child to pick up and put away toys when they’re finished playing.

Fresh Design Inspiration For The New Year
By: Julia Kilberg
New Year, new home ideas for your renovation projects. We rounded up interior design trends you’ll see in home remodeling and design projects in 2019. If you need fresh design inspiration for the New Year, read on. We’ll have you wanting to tackle your remodeling resolutions in no time.
Multifunctional Furnishings
Modular, sectional furnishings, like the LoveSac brand, are a big hit among young families. Both practical in design and style, multifunctional furniture grows with you and changes as your living situation and needs dictate.
We’re also seeing multifunctional spaces in remodeled homes. Mudrooms that double as laundry rooms keep your dirtiest items out of sight, for example. Office nooks in kitchens or living rooms are also popular when you have to make the most out of limited real estate.
Clean Before Storing
Everything from accent walls to chairs has been popular over the years. Now, look out for statement ceilings in 2019. This is a very unique way for you to add a “wow” factor to any room, but we recommend sticking with a small space for this bold design choice. A powder room or small bathroom really comes to life by adding a bright paint color, three-dimensional material, geometric beams, or a unique lighting choice. Just make sure it fits with your design aesthetic.
This bedroom remodel in Vienna, Virginia, has an eye-catching ceiling. The fan is framed by the recessed ceiling, adding depth and character to the room. You can easily picture this in a living room as well.
Dark Colors
Deep, dark colors (paired with bright accents like Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year, Living Coral) are making an interior design comeback in 2019. Dark floors and accent walls give a deep warmth to the room.
These two bathrooms offer design inspiration for unique spaces. They use dark colors without being too overwhelming. One way to add dark richness to a bathroom remodel without overcommitting to the color choice is through accent tiles in your shower.
Retro & Bold Patterns
Everything vintage is making a comeback these days. That holds true for the home design and remodeling market as well. Look for retro furnishings and bold patterns in 2019 carried throughout the home, from living rooms to kitchens to bathrooms. Mid-Century modern design choices, like terrazzo floors and tiles and art deco, are also exploding on the scene.
Choose a smaller area, like a powder room or mudroom, to experiment with bold patterns, materials, and color choices. This transitional mudroom designed in Fairfax, Virginia, makes a fun statement with its green patterned walls.

9 Clever Design Solutions For Crowded Living Rooms
By: Julia Kilberg
As fall and winter usher in the hosting season, we have tips to help you create the optimal living room design. Turn a crowded space into an exceptional holiday hosting space with these clever design solutions.
Make Structural Changes
One of the first questions a remodeler should ask is how you envision the updated living room to fit into your lifestyle. Often, living rooms carry the burdens of dated architectural decisions that make the spaces more cramped. If you have floor-to-ceiling columns blocking the flow, a new load-bearing beam can be replaced in the ceiling for an open-concept look.
The same goes for old HVAC duct systems that are bumped out from the ceilings and walls. Look for ways to restructure the room or move things, like fireplaces or built-ins, to better match the gathering space and how you’d like to use it moving forward.
Install Built-Ins
If the living room layout is too crowded by furniture, consider installing built-in bookshelves or a bench. This maximizes wall space and reduces the amount of clutter in the room.
In this Arlington, Virginia, home, built-in cabinetry under the living room windows looks fresh and new. This custom storage optimizes a space that might otherwise be unused.
Floor-To-Ceiling Windows
A room designed with floor-to-ceiling windows automatically feels bigger and brighter. This Oakton, Virginia, home has beautiful, 17-by-5-foot pieces of glass in its circular living room to open up the space. New windows make a great investment, particularly if you have a gorgeous view.
Use Light Colors
A quick, easy way to update a living room design is by changing the color. Whites, neutral beiges, and grays are popular choices. Use light neutrals on the walls to brighten up small gathering spaces, and employ pops of color with furniture or accent pillows. Check out Benjamin Moore’s inspiration guide for tips on living room colors.
To complement light paint, install updated recessed lighting to further brighten a living room. Updated lighting ensures that the gathering space feels less drab. Dimmable soft-white bulbs are optimal for living rooms, so choose the brightness you need depending on the occasion. Recessed or hanging light fixtures also enable you to donate any floor or table lamps that clutter the gathering space.
Maximize “Dead” Space
If you have a small living room, maximize “dead” or unused spaces. The area beneath the stairs is often overlooked but, with a thoughtful design idea, could be turned into something functional, like a built-in shelf or desk nook.
Think Minimalist
Don’t overburden the gathering space with large, clunky furniture. Think about how you use the space and get rid of any unnecessary furniture. Is the living room mostly used for sitting and chatting with guests? Move the TV elsewhere, and ditch the oversized entertainment console.
Do you prefer a comfy, cozy sitting area? Pair one or two small couches or chairs with a side table in the center of the room for reading and sipping tea.
Add Character
Add design flair to a living room and create a “wow” factor in even the smallest spaces. Think about whether you’d like a farmhouse chic or modern look. Check out our blog posts on those design ideas to see how your design style might fit in.
Pull Furniture Away From Walls
Particularly in long living rooms, think about arranging the furniture in the center of the room instead of along the walls. The living room layout impacts how crowded the space feels. According to The Spruce, creating pathways for walking and conversing creates a cozier space. They also suggest using circular or oval furniture to create a long living room that’s not overwhelmed with rectangular shapes.
This McLean, Virginia, home has a gorgeous living room layout with vaulted ceilings and an eye-catching stone fireplace. The lack of wall real estate for furniture doesn’t mean a great gathering space can’t be created. This room’s L-shaped couch-and-chair combo creates a cozy seating area even in the large space.

5 Things Every Gathering Space Needs
Gathering spaces in your home should feel comfortable, relaxed, and welcoming. How do you achieve a look that creates that type of environment? What details are necessary to put you and your guests at ease? How can you create the type of space where people want to spend time?
These questions come back to homeowners time and again. With creativity and help from MOSS experts, you can create a luxurious and functional space for you, your friends, and loved ones.
Attractive Paint Colors
Paint colors have a big effect on the mood and atmosphere in the room. For example, formal, gentle shades of gray create a mellow but happy environment where friends can talk over coffee or wine, exchanging stories and laughter. Meanwhile, brighter bolder shades of blue or green encourage louder and more boisterous conversations.
An accent wall breaks up the space. Often, accent walls stand in contrast to the rest of the room. This creates balance and a sense of excitement that makes your gathering space fun, playful, and a little bit unpredictable.
Intimate Furniture Arrangements
Furniture arrangements have a big influence on how people interact when they spend time together. Arranging furniture by zones, with like pieces of furniture facing each other, creates a sense of intimacy and gives purpose to the room.
Symmetrical furniture arrangements are more formal and appropriate for rooms where people gather for formal events.
Asymmetrical arrangements have a relaxed and casual air and are more appropriate for parts of your home where close family members gather. Give careful consideration to your furniture arrangement to ensure that the arrangement you choose is right for the room you’re decorating.
Personalized Touches
Built-in cabinets and shelves, crown molding, and wainscotting give the room old-world character that adds value and visual interest. These personalized touches make your home different from the others in your neighborhood. Built-in benches give you and your friends a space to read, talk, or have a cup of tea. Personalized touches, like a built-in hutch, add convenience that makes your gathering space an easy place to spend time with others.
Open Spaces
Open floor plans are gaining in popularity because they encourage communal discussion, bring families together, and make entertaining easy. Modern gathering spaces are often connected to other rooms, so the kitchen, living room, and dining room all blend together into one.
Keep these spaces distinct from one another by arranging the furniture creatively, placing screens where necessary, and laying down different rugs. If your home is older and walls separate your communal spaces, talk to a contractor to find out how you can join your spaces together to create a modern and open floor plan.
Creative Lighting
Lighting is crucial in a part of your home like the living, family, or dining. Natural lighting during the day helps create a sense of calm and quiet. Daylight bathes people and objects in flattering illumination. Maximize this to the best of your ability by installing a large window and removing heavy drapes to keep the room light and bright.
Small lamps light up different zones of the room and create a sense of intimacy after dark. Well-placed lamps enable a group of people to sit together in a sphere of light, while another group uses a different part of the room in a separate sphere of light.
Pendant lighting and chandeliers add a sense of the extraordinary to otherwise ordinary living spaces. Match the pendant lighting to your tastes and decor in the room. A classic globe light creates a sense of vintage style, while an asymmetrical contemporary chandelier looks best when paired with modern furniture and other details.
Dimmers are a “must-have” in the dining room, according to a helpful Houzz interview with a respected lighting expert. To build on that idea, install dimmers in any room where you meet with people in the evening hours.

Design Inspiration To Get You In The Holiday Spirit
Christmas is my favorite time of the year. The seasonal designs and decorations on everything from Starbucks cups to the grocery store shelves always put me in the holiday spirit. Read on for design inspiration that will have you singing “Jingle Bells” in no time.
Perfect Your Gathering Space
The summer and early fall are great times to kick off small renovation projects to get your home ready for holiday hosting. Our blog on living room renovations gives great tips on how to upgrade your gathering space. If it’s too late to get started on a large project, ensure smaller honey-do items are taken care of before guests arrive.
Fix baseboard nicks, patch holes in the drywall, change light bulbs, and fix any cracks on the outdoor steps or walkways before the holidays. This ensures that guests see your home in all its glory. If you need help, give us a call and we can send a MOSS handyman to your home to complete those tasks.
Decorate The Mantel
Almost all my decorations center around the fireplace this season. I like to spruce up the mantel with pre-lit faux evergreens that are battery-operated. These are super easy to turn on and off when we want to light up the space. I also hang our stockings from decorative stocking holders that double as weights to hold the garland decoration down.
If your fireplace needs a little extra TLC, we can help. Many of our Northern Virginia renovations feature upgrades to fireplaces and mantels. A red brick hearth can quickly be updated to a more modern look by painting it white.
Stone masonry paired with a textured wood mantel is a popular renovation choice if you want a complete overhaul of the living room fireplace. For simple decorative upgrades, Ballard Designs online store (and its Tysons Corner mall location) have great pieces to help any hearth look fresh for the season.
Make The Porch Festive
I love all the holiday ideas for porch decorations on Pinterest. Typically, though, I stick to a simple wreath and these pre-lit indoor/outdoor trees from Improvements. The trees are great because they’re easy to set up and battery-operated with a timer, so I can schedule them to go on and off when I want.
Don’t forget to switch out the welcome mat to something more festive this season, too. I have this snowman one from Crate and Barrel. Make sure all the outdoor lights and lanterns have new bulbs that shine bright all night.
Switch Out Paintings & Wall Decor
Look no further for interior design inspiration than your own walls. Instead of storing a ton of knickknack decorations in the attic all year, I have a few larger pieces that I like to hang around the house.
Since nails and picture hangers are already in the walls holding up various family photos and paintings throughout the year, it’s easy to switch out what’s already there with something more seasonal for a month or two. Wayfair is stocked with adorable canvas wall art pieces that feature snowmen, Christmas trucks, deer, and holiday messages.
Make it easy on yourself and buy a few staples that can be stored in the hallway closet for simple decorating next year.
Dining Table Flair
Design inspiration is ever-present when it comes to dining room table holiday flair. In my home, I update my dining room table runner to a red flannel one. Closer to Christmas, I get a nice evergreen centerpiece. Getting a real one helps me infuse my home with a fresh pine smell without having to invest time and frustration in a real tree. (We love the ease of artificial pre-lit trees.)
Something I’ve seen as an interior design trend this season are rustic birch vases and centerpieces from L.L.Bean. They look great in a kitchen, dining room, or living room with the rustic farmhouse chic look like the Moss Building & Design remodel in Ashburn, Virginia.

9 Tips For Prepping Your Home For The Holidays
The holidays are the perfect opportunity to decorate your home! Good decorations spread warmth and feelings of joy and make your home feel like the place to be during the holidays. Decorating is fun and challenging, so here’s what you need to know to decorate your home this holiday season.
Fill The House With Light
The holidays coincide with a lot of natural darkness inside and outside the home. The days are short at this time of year, and winter is just too cold. When guests come, lights make your home feel more welcoming. Decorate your home with light during the holidays!
Place candles on surfaces like tables, counters, and the mantel. If you’re worried about fire hazards, use battery-powered candles. They’re very realistic and have a reassuring glow.
String twinkle lights across the mantel, over your kitchen cabinets, around the kitchen window, and through the centerpiece on your dining room table. If you’re worried about extension cords ruining the effect, buy a battery-powered string of twinkle lights and hide the battery pack.
Keep a fire lit in your fireplace whenever family or friends come over for a holiday celebration. Keep a stack of wood near the fireplace to add to the rustic beauty of your hearth. Invest in a tabletop candelabra for your dining room table centerpiece, or place a candelabra on your mantel.
Add Touches Of Greenery
At this wintery time of year, many homeowners decorate their house with touches of greenery. Wind live or artificial greenery around your staircase railing, doorways, windows, over the mantel, and in your dining room centerpiece.
Keep all greenery away from open flames. This is especially important around the mantel and any candles that you light in your home.
Decorate Your Home With Winter Weather Squash
Squash is a very popular fall decoration, but it’s a winter decoration as well. Look for squash that’s green, white, and other cool winter colors. White pumpkins, in particular, are a symbol of the season and can be combined with other symbols of nature like red berries, holly, and greenery. Use squash as a focal point in rooms like your kitchen or other gathering spaces.
Hang Laurel Leaf Garland
Clip laurel leaves and dry them in your garage or on a craft table. Once they’re dry, paint them with gold spray paint and string them together to form a garland. Golden laurel leaf garland decorates your coffee table, end tables, and the spaces over windows and entryways. Gold spray paint gives laurel leaves a festive look that you’ll love.
Use Holiday Floral Arrangements
Holiday floral arrangements are the perfect addition to any gathering spaces for guests during a holiday celebration. Live flowers are best because of their fragrance and beauty.
Place floral arrangements in the center of your dining room table or on the mantel. Keep the flowers properly watered to ensure that they look their best for guests. Replace or get rid of the flowers as soon as they wilt.
Force Holiday Bulb Flowers
The holidays are a time when many flowers won’t grow in the garden. However, bulbs grow indoors in humid, warm environments like the bathroom. Put bulb flowers like paperwhites in a pot, and then place the pot in a sunny location like a windowsill. Paperwhites and other bulb flowers make your bathroom look festive and joyful over the holidays.
Place Stained Glass In Your Windows
Stained glass is festive and has a sacred quality that’s perfect for holiday celebrations. Place stained glass in windows that get a lot of light. Stained glass bounces light around your room and make your home more festive.
Avoid placing stained glass in windows that are dark (namely, windows with a northern or eastern exposure). Stained glass is less effective in dark windows and also blocks natural light in rooms that need it badly.
Remodel
Now’s the time of year to repaint walls, refinish cabinets, and brighten your home for festivities. If you’re ready to begin a home remodel project, contact Moss Building & Design at 703-961-7707 or email us at Hello@MossBuildingandDesign.com.
6 Types Of Gathering Spaces For Your Home
Your home should be designed for living and enjoyment. The best way to do this is by creating different types of gathering spaces in your home, so everyone can be together and spend more time together!
Whether your goal is to create a space for your family or to look for spaces for family and friends to come together, these are some great ideas to get you started. Help everyone spend quality time together!
Family Room
A family room is a great space to really bring people together. It’s a space for everyone to enjoy!
Keep it simple by adding a television or stacking up old-fashioned board or card games for everyone to play. It’s even versatile enough to change with the seasons using different decor throughout the year. Add a string of hearts across the mantle for Valentine’s Day, or include a few floral accents for the spring. There are a lot of possibilities for a family room!
Game Room/Playroom
Everyone loves a game room or a playroom. This is a spot to enjoy with your competitive family and friends. In this room, place retro video games, foosball, or ping-pong.
You can turn any room in your home into a game room or playroom, but one of the most common rooms that people turn into a game room or playroom is the basement. Of course, you’re limited here, so choose the right space that makes sense for your overall design idea and the space available in your home!
This MOSS design idea on Houzz showcases the ultimate basement game room with a nice pool table.
Living Room
The living room is a lot like the family room. People tend to naturally gather here because it’s typically the biggest space. Make this space even more welcoming with the right design components. Set out comfortable blankets, pillows, and various seating options.
This room is also a lot like the family room in that you can change your overall design throughout the year with small home decor changes or additions, like pumpkins in the fall or small Christmas trees in the winter.
Dining Room
The dining room is a place that people always gather in when you have food on the table. Who doesn’t love a nice meal that’s warm and ready to eat? Bring the two ideas together by creating a welcoming room and making sure that your family eats there as much as possible.
In a world where we’re constantly moving, this is a refreshing concept – and one that should be focused on as a gathering space. Check out this beautiful dining room in Northern Virginia for traditional design ideas.
Sunroom
No matter the time of the year, spending time in a sunroom provides added light to your life and those that you love. No matter what the season is, you can enjoy the change in the weather from the comfort of your own home.
With the right design aspect and idea, everyone will gather here in no time. To get started, add comfortable chairs or an outdoor couch. Consider a small indoor fire pit or a vertical garden to add natural elements and bring the outside inside.
Home Addition
If you don’t have the ideal space already in your home, you can always add exactly what you want with a home addition. This is especially true if you’re running out of existing space in your home and are looking for just a bit more space to accommodate your growing family and friends. Make this space exactly what you want and need it to be by letting MOSS help you.
Media Room
A media room is an ideal space because you can bring people together for a movie, TV show, sporting event, or streaming option. Complete the room with cozy chairs and a snack and drink area. If you’re looking for a great design idea, check out this at-home theater from MOSS.
Not only that, but you can use the space to get people together before and after you finish with the big screen. Set out a popcorn buffet before binge-watching, or play a post-movie quiz game to see who found the most hidden Easter eggs.
These are just a few ideas to get you started for your home design plans for gathering spaces. You can start with one room, and then build from there to create more gathering spaces to entertain.

Before & After: A Marvelous McLean Remodel
BY: JULIA KILBERG
MOSS transformed this beautiful McLean, Virginia, home to encompass the homeowner’s love of timeless design with functional style and simple sophistication. The home had great bones but was in need of MOSS’ design team to deliver that “wow” factor.
While the kitchen remodel was a priority, other updates to the first-floor living room and second-floor master bathroom made the new updated design carry throughout the home.
The MOSS project managers, design team, and contractors adeptly communicated with the homeowners, who traveled internationally during the renovation, to surpass expectation on this marvelous Northern Virginia remodel.
McLean Kitchen Remodel
A kitchen remodel is one of the best investments you can make in your home – and one you can reap the benefits of daily. This McLean kitchen was originally dated by the light wood cabinetry, so the homeowner completely updated the room with a classic white design. The painted fine maple cabinetry from Landmark features soft close doors – a must-have in all new kitchen designs.
The white Carrara marble and grey Caesarstone countertops and island marry elegance with functionality for long-standing durability in this kitchen. Caesarstone is a great kitchen countertop choice versus granite because it doesn’t require any sealant to resist spills.
The darker wood flooring adds to the updated look and wonderfully complements the white cabinets and enlarged island.
Even though the homeowner kept the original stainless steel appliances and two hanging pendant lights above the island, the other renovations make the space look completely new.
Living Room Remodeling Upgrades
This living room needed a few touches to make the home renovation complete throughout the home. A simple stone masonry fireplace was transformed into a more modern white mantle and hearth that makes the space look fresh and new.
The same dark hardwood flooring from the kitchen is carried through to the open-concept living space for continuity. Finally, updated paint colors and new furniture finish off the space.
Master Bathroom Remodel
This home’s large master bathroom offered the MOSS team a lot of real estate to complete a stunning bathroom update. The original brown and white colors of the room are drab compared to the new updates to the vanity countertops and flooring. The gorgeous gray stone tile floor adds rich warmth to the room.
Framed mirrors are very trendy. They make the vanity area pop and add color and depth to walls. The large mirrors in this bathroom remodel look great with the darker frames to help them stand out from the white and gray cabinetry and countertops.
Italian marble from Mosaic Tile was placed in the walk-in shower and around the adjacent deep bathing tub. We love the square Kohler rainhead fixture as well, which makes any shower feel like a spa experience.
Check out more pictures of this stunning remodel in our Houzz photo album here.
