If you’ve spent any time on our website, you may have already met Natalie. She’s MOSS’s AI-powered research assistant, but she’s not a generic AI. “Do I have to pay anything before I get an estimate?”

This is the question underneath almost every cost conversation Natalie has. Not “how much will my kitchen cost?” but something more fundamental: what does it cost me just to find out what this might cost?

The answer, until you’re ready to sign a contract: nothing.

The MOSS process starts with a Virtual Discovery Session, a complimentary 30-minute call with a Project Developer. (That’s not a salesperson. MOSS Project Developers are non-commissioned, which means their job is to understand your goals and help you figure out the right path, not to close a deal.) From there, if the project looks like a fit, we schedule an in-home visit where we come out to walk the space, take measurements, and conduct precision LIDAR scans of your home. Then comes the Project Presentation, hosted by your Project Developer, where you'll walk through design concepts and budget options built around your home and your priorities.

There’s no financial obligation from your first call through the full project presentation. The only money that changes hands is a $2,500 deposit, and that comes after you’ve seen the full presentation and decided to move forward by signing a contract. That deposit is fully refundable through your second design review meeting, so even once you’ve signed, there’s still a meaningful window to step back if something changes.

“What happens after I sign?”

You’ll receive a welcome email officially introducing you to your dedicated team: Designer, Architect, and Project Manager. From there, the design and planning phase begins. For about 2 to 3 months, you will collaborate with your team to finalize architectural drawings, lock in a fixed cost, and make selections. Once design is complete, construction drawings go to the county for permits, which typically adds 4+ weeks, but can take longer depending on scope of work and where you live. Construction timelines also vary by scope: a kitchen remodel and a two-story addition are very different commitments, and your team will give you a specific construction schedule before work begins.

“Is there a fee for the first meeting?”

No. The Virtual Discovery Session is complimentary.

“What’s included in the $2,500?”

It kicks off the full design and planning phase, including architectural and engineering services, design development, selection support, and project planning. It also keeps MOSS’s in-house team of architects, designers, and project managers dedicated to your project throughout that process. 

“What is the process, and how long will everything take?”

Homeowners want a roadmap. They want to know what they’re walking into before they take the first step, which is reasonable, because a renovation is not a small decision.

Here’s how the MOSS process moves:

Virtual Discovery Session: A 30-minute call, conducted on Microsoft Teams, to explore your goals, budget range, and timeline.

In-Home Appointment: Our team visits to see the space firsthand, conduct precision scans, and gather what they need to start shaping your project.

Project Presentation: Meet with your Project Developer and review solutions tailored to your home, goals, and budget.

Design and Planning Phase: Once you sign and place the $2,500 deposit, the full team engages. Using MOSS 360 – an augmented and virtual reality design capability – your architects and designers can build out your project in immersive detail so you can virtually walk your completed space before a single wall comes down. The design phase runs approximately 2 to 3 months, and you’ll typically spend about 2 to 3 hours per week in collaboration with your dedicated team.

Permitting: Once the design is near completion, construction drawings are submitted to the county. Permitting adds roughly 4+ on average, though it varies by jurisdiction and project type.

Construction: Your Project Manager oversees the build daily. During construction, your time commitment drops to about 1 hour per week. Timelines depend on scope, and your team will commit to a specific schedule in writing before work begins. All workmanship carries a three-year warranty.
