Our MOSS Building & Design homeowners dreamed of owning a historic home in Herndon and had their eyes specifically on this property for many years. When it came on the market, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase it. Built in 1910, the home has incredible charm and character and the location, in the heart of the town, was ideal. However, two principal areas, they knew immediately, had to change to fit the more modern lifestyles of today.

Formal Dining Room Re-Imagined as Eat-In Kitchen

The home’s original kitchen, located at the rear of the home, was originally intended to function as a place to prepare and cook meals to be served in the grand dining room, which was in the center of the home, serving as an entertainment hub. Knowing this wasn’t their long-term vision of their home, our customers partnered with MOSS to essentially flip the two spaces, creating an eat-in kitchen with massive center island, plentiful storage, and much more.

Massive Center Island with Marble Top

The center island, topped with Cosmos New Super White Honed Brazilian marble from Eurostone Craft, dominates the room and seats up to three people, and features two dishwashers, a microwave, prep sink, and storage. The cabinetry in the kitchen, procured from Hampshire Cabinetry, is painted in the color Chantilly Lace, which is highly popular with MOSS customers. A unique feature in one of the cabinets is the built-in baking center; semi-custom cabinetry gives our customers the opportunity to create the space and storage they want versus being limited by pre-built cabinetry sets. Finally, the light fixtures above the island, supplied directly from the homeowner, are Clemson Classic Pendants that were procured from Restoration Hardware.

The use of navy throughout the kitchen is a nod to the homeowner’s fine china, displayed throughout, as well as the stove, which is an AGA Elise 48” dual fuel range in Midnight Sky, providing a contrasting look to the otherwise gorgeously streamlined all white kitchen.

Finally, the kitchen backsplash, set in a traditional subway pattern, is Imperial Bianco Gloss 3x6 tile, and is from The Tile Shop.

New Primary Bathroom from Former Bonus Room

It is taken for granted these days that a primary bedroom will automatically have an ensuite bathroom. For this historic home, however, that was not the case. The primary bedroom was connected to what was known as a “bonus room.” Our MOSS design team investigated creating an attached primary bathroom for our homeowners from this space. This process involved not only closing off a set of stairs, but also firming up the structural engineering of the home.

Bathroom Features Mimic Whole House Look & Feel

MOSS transformed the home’s bonus room into a stunning spa-like primary bathroom, which required that all associated plumbing for the bathroom be run upstairs through the floors and walls. The layout of the new bathroom reflected both present day needs and original touches. For example, the custom arch on the ceiling above the water closet matches the original arch located in one of the open doorways in the home’s kitchen. Bringing that element upstairs provided a continuous flow of design throughout the home.

Today, the bathroom is a welcoming, bright space with a large walk-in tiled shower, a free-standing tub next to a window that allows in soothing natural light, and a gorgeous vanity repurposed from a beloved piece of furniture. The shower has a glass enclosure from Dulles Glass and Carrara Mosaic marble tile from Mosaic Tile, while the tub, purchased by the homeowners, is from Kohler. The vanity top is the same as the kitchen countertops, marble stone from Eurostone Craft. The master bathroom’s floor is the original hardwood, treated to be able to withstand water, and was provided by Derr Flooring. The bathroom wall sconces are from Restoration Hardware.

Large Bedroom with Plenty of Light

The new addition was added to the main level of this Oakton home off the living room, which makes it a natural extension from the original structure. The addition is within several feet of the kitchen, which is helpful so that another kitchen didn’t have to be added. The doorways are wide to accommodate wheelchair use, and the windows have electric shades easily controlled by remote. The carpet is from Mohawk Flooring in the color Ghost Town while all interior doors are courtesy of TW Perry.

Spacious Bathroom & Water Closet with Safety Features

Again featuring large doorways, the addition’s bathroom and separate water closet feature several safety elements. The water closet has safety bars for grabbing, and the shower has a curbless entry. The shower has beautiful neutral tile and fixtures from Morris Tile.

Walk-In Closet and Home Office Complete Oakton Remodel

Because the goal of this remodel was a full suite, not only does it include a bedroom and bathroom, but, also, a roomy walk-in closet and generous home office. The closet was designed specifically so that clothes could be reachable from both standing and seated. The office faces the home’s backyard and has large windows with plentiful views of nature.

Our MOSS Building & Design customers, who grew up in Fairfax, were thrilled to purchase a home in the community they loved their entire lives. After finding their forever home and residing in it for several years (and adding children to the mix), they realized that the original layout and design of the home wasn’t functional for their needs. Partnering with MOSS and our design team helped them realize that the addition of space (to include two bedrooms and a bathroom) above the main level would give them the breathing room they needed. By creating bedrooms on the upper level, the former main level bedrooms were remodeled into a sitting room and additional bathroom. And, finally, in a moment of inspiration, our homeowners realized that with the work having displaced their family to the home’s basement during the renovation, they should move forward with a primary bathroom remodel.

Main Level Home Updates and Additions

Looking at images of this Fairfax home, it’s almost impossible to believe how different it looked prior to its remodel. Initially, the front entrance was closer to the home’s driveway, but it entered right into the dining room. Shifting it to the left allowed our teams to create a proper foyer and entrance and allow the dining room to have a sense of privacy.

The addition of the second level meant that MOSS could transform former main level spaces into a new sitting area and bathroom. The main floor bathroom features a Rosslyn Single Sink Vanity from Pottery Barn and a semi-custom built-in set of shelves from Hampshire Cabinetry. The bathroom also has porcelain tile on the floor in Norwalk Floor Deco 8x8 matte tile and Santa Monica subway tile on bathtub/shower walls. All the tile was procured from The Tile Shop.

Gorgeous Second Level Updates

The new second level was created over the left side of the home (looking from street view). Stairs were already in place leading to the original primary bedroom and bathroom, so, they were refinished as part of the home’s update. All flooring is from Derr Flooring. At the top of the stairs, the new addition begins with a large bathroom. The fully tiled bathtub/shower highlights Loft Royal Blue glass tile on the walls with Super White glass penny mosaic tile on the niche and picture frame surrounding the window.

The two new bedrooms that were created are the perfect spot for the children of the home - and they were given a sweet surprise by the addition of a secret passageway between the two closets. What a fun and whimsical way to celebrate their new space!

Spa-Like Primary Bathroom

In the later stages of this renovation, our Fairfax homeowners realized that if they were already camping in their basement, they may as well update their primary bathroom, which they had hoped to do initially. By taking space from the upstairs hallway, a large and spacious bathroom was able to be created.

The floor of the bathroom features Marble Tech Bianco Gioia matte porcelain tile, while the shower walls are Santa Monica white subway tile with the niche displaying Oyster White Illusion tile. All tile was purchased from The Tile Shop. The beautiful glass enclosure is from Dulles Glass and all the bathroom fixtures are from Build.com.

Herndon Primary Bathroom Remodel Inspired by “Hygge”

Inspired by the Scandinavian feeling of “hygge,” which is a lifestyle of comfort and warmth, our Herndon homeowners worked with our design team to create a bathroom that was comfortable, quietly rustic, functional, spa-like, and, most importantly, soothing. This Herndon Primary Bathroom Remodel was a great showcase of what MOSS can do with bathroom remodeling services.

Creating Dream Primary Bathroom

Our customers knew that their primary bathroom was far too small for them. By taking space from the adjoining hallway and reducing the size of their bedroom closet, the space was found to create a remodeled bathroom that gives them the space they desired for a soaking tub, large vanity, beautiful walk-in shower, and, for privacy, a separate water closet with small vanity. Plentiful storage in all the spaces but also on the floating shelves leading to the water closet was also a key component to the design.

Gorgeous Flooring Doubles on Walls

Our design team suggested that the floor tile, that looks like hardwood, be used also as an accent on the wall behind the tub and shower area as well as in the water closet. What a gorgeous way to create a spa-like feeling and add more soothing neutral tones to the space! The tile is from The Tile Shop.

The shower floor tile, from Daltile, is a black porcelain, while the shower wall tile, laid in a brick pattern, is Florentine Carrara and from Daltile as well, and, finally, the shower glass enclosure is from Dulles Glass. All bathroom plumbing fixtures were procured from Ferguson.

The bathroom vanity features a Silestone countertop from Eurostone Craft sitting atop a Danenburg 48-inch cabinet in Russet Brown.

Neutral Wall Colors Create Ambiance

The color of the walls in any room can set the tone for a space. Our homeowners chose a Sherwin-Williams Origami White for all the walls and a Sherwin-Williams Reflective White for their trim and doors.
