Inspired by the Scandinavian feeling of “hygge,” which is a lifestyle of comfort and warmth, our Herndon homeowners worked with our design team to create a bathroom that was comfortable, quietly rustic, functional, spa-like, and, most importantly, soothing. This Herndon Primary Bathroom Remodel was a great showcase of what MOSS can do with bathroom remodeling services.

Creating Dream Primary Bathroom

Our customers knew that their primary bathroom was far too small for them. By taking space from the adjoining hallway and reducing the size of their bedroom closet, the space was found to create a remodeled bathroom that gives them the space they desired for a soaking tub, large vanity, beautiful walk-in shower, and, for privacy, a separate water closet with small vanity. Plentiful storage in all the spaces but also on the floating shelves leading to the water closet was also a key component to the design.

Gorgeous Flooring Doubles on Walls

Our design team suggested that the floor tile, that looks like hardwood, be used also as an accent on the wall behind the tub and shower area as well as in the water closet. What a gorgeous way to create a spa-like feeling and add more soothing neutral tones to the space! The tile is from The Tile Shop.

The shower floor tile, from Daltile, is a black porcelain, while the shower wall tile, laid in a brick pattern, is Florentine Carrara and from Daltile as well, and, finally, the shower glass enclosure is from Dulles Glass. All bathroom plumbing fixtures were procured from Ferguson.

The bathroom vanity features a Silestone countertop from Eurostone Craft sitting atop a Danenburg 48-inch cabinet in Russet Brown.

The color of the walls in any room can set the tone for a space. Our homeowners chose a Sherwin-Williams Origami White for all the walls and a Sherwin-Williams Reflective White for their trim and doors.

A beautifully soothing bathroom, such as this one in Herndon, can be achieved with careful design decisions coupled with an inspired vision.

Our MOSS Building & Design customers wanted to stay in their home in their McLean community, with friendly neighbors and good schools for their children, however, their home, a standard split foyer, didn’t suit their needs as their children grew. Working with our design team, the homeowners decided to “build up” and add an entire upper level to their home, which included a primary suite with attached bathroom, two bedrooms for their children with a “jack and jill” connected bathroom, a large laundry room, and much more storage. MOSS also transformed an original bedroom into a new home gym and updated the basement with built-ins and a fireplace to mimic the new built-ins and fireplace on the main level living room, plus added on a front porch with beautiful stonework. A final touch? The entire exterior was updated with new siding and a subdued blue gray color scheme – a dramatic difference from the original brick exterior.

The most immediate change to this home was on the exterior. After building the second level, the entire home was outfitted with James Hardie Woodgrain Straight Shingle Night Gray siding on the roof while the exterior walls had James Hardie Exposure Woodgrain Lap Siding, also in Night Gray, installed. The newly built front porch features natural facings Autumn Crest mosaic stone from Sislers Stone and a porch light from Wayfair.com.

Gorgeous Fireplace Built-Ins in Basement and Family Room and new Home Gym

Because the family chose to build an addition for more space, their original basement and living room were able to be remodeled with featured built ins and fireplaces. Both rooms now have prefabricated gas fireplaces from Fireside Hearth & Home, as well as built-ins hand crafted by MOSS carpenters. In addition, both rooms feature countertops from EuroStone Craft on the fireplace hearths, with the basement showcasing granite and the living room featuring Silestone.

In addition, a former bedroom was able to be transformed into a home gym with new rubber gym flooring, procured from Rubber Flooring, Inc.

Foyer Chandelier Highlights New Stairs and Railing

The addition of a second level to this home was a natural way to add the space the family desired while also keeping their generous yard available for outdoor family time. A full center staircase was added and outfitted with hardwood floors to match the rest of the house. Kitchens have long been regarded as the central gathering place for families, but, for years, in more of a utilitarian sense. For the past 20 to 30 years, though, homeowners have begun regarding their kitchens as more than just the place to cook and serve meals – kitchens have become integral parts of the home, being designed to portray not just a style and aesthetic but also a feeling of completeness to the home’s overall design. We spoke to Denise Dermody, MOSS Project Designer, about recent kitchen design trends that she’s been seeing with our customers and learned the following.  

Dedicated Cabinetry 

Many of our MOSS customers enjoy cooking and baking in their kitchens and long to use every square inch of their space efficiently. A popular trend these days is dedicated and specific cabinetry choices, whether that’s a cabinet with a built-in stand mixer, cabinets with built-in dividers for various cutting boards or cookie sheets, full cabinets dedicated to baking supplies and spices, or pull-out drawers with built-in holders for kitchen utensils and more. Individuals aren’t cookie cutters, and these days, neither is cabinetry!  

Moving Away from White Kitchens 

The trend for an all-white kitchen is slowly fading (although plenty of customers still appreciate a clean, all-white space). Nowadays, our customers are looking at their kitchen as part of their entire home, and how the selections and colors therein flow well with the rest of their home’s design. Customers are choosing colorful or warm tones for cabinetry and adding in touches of home such as leather handles and lacquered brash finishes. Overall, finishes such as fixtures and knobs are trending towards more comfortable and warmer versus clean and cold.  

Natural Finishes 

Many kitchen designs are trending toward natural finishes, including concrete, natural stone and natural wood countertops, for example. A lean towards things you’d find in nature and various types of woods are also a trend for customers. Customers are adding open space and open upper cabinets to their kitchen designs in order to showcase books, pottery, and other personal items, creating spaces that are welcoming and cozy.

According to Layton, customers remodel bathrooms for a variety of reasons. Primary bathrooms are often remodeled to create a more relaxing space for unwinding at the end of a long day.  

Guest Bathrooms

Guest and hallway bathrooms are remodeled to improve the overall look of the home. And, lately, more and more ADA accessible bathrooms are being designed and built on the main floor of a home for those customers who want to age in place.

One beautiful example of a primary bathroom remodel is shown here, wherein a customer in Arlington wanted their bathroom remodeled to accommodate their style as well as to include a custom sauna for relaxation and health purposes.

Layton shared that the MOSS process for any remodel, and especially with bathrooms, is deliberately planned to develop a very personalized concept during the design forward stage of the partnership with the customers. No designs are “cookie cutter” unless that is the homeowners’ request. Bathrooms are some of the most daunting projects for designers as there are many selections that need to coordinate perfectly to create the finished product. For example, fixtures, multiple types and styles of tile, cabinets, countertops, accessories, hardware, lighting, etc. are all typical selections needed in what is a relatively small space.
